Hiya,
Shaking up your routine is good.. if you stick at the same thing for too long your body gets used to it and you dont end up improving. I have read that 3 months doing the same routine is long enough (but that was in the gym).. shaking it up is also good for improving your endurance... so increase the speed at which you run is a good thing.. then go back to running at your slower or normal rate. Interval training is also good.. so switching it up during the run.. running for a couple of minutes at a slower speed then increasing that for the next minute and then back down again. In terms of answering your question about 6.0mph... that is harder for me to answer, because i dont know how long you have been running for etc. I run between 6 - 10km/ph.. and sometimes run quicker like full on sprint when I am doing interveral trainning.. I havent been running per say that long.. as I was doing other things in the gym, but have got bored and started running...0 -

I have been running for a little over a year. I have been running 2 miles for most of the year. Then a switched to 2 1/2 miles 5.5 mph and now I am doing one day a week with 6 mph 1 mile...
If you run 10 mph that means you run 6 min miles...which means you're hauling! lol0 -

haha... i meant I run at 6 - 10 kilometers which is.. 3.7 - 6.2 miles an hr...so roughly the same as you...I have been running 3 miles in the gym when I go... roughly 4 times a week and most of the time i run steadily on 6mph... but I do increase that to a sprint for a minute when I am doing interval training..0 -
Great topic. I am trying to do this, too.
I wouldn't worry about whether it's an "equivalent" intensity. Try High Intensity Interval Training! I recently went from running a 5k most days to trying HIIT. Now I do 30 seconds sprinting, 1 minute 30 seconds jogging, 30 seconds sprinting, etc. It's pretty cool and seems to be working. Also works when I'm on an elliptical at the gym. It keeps my brain busy but also helps me focus on my body (strength, speed, form, breathing), which is definitely helpful when exercising.
Keep up the great work!0 -

Good on ya if you can do that much for starting but I mean if that was me I wouldnt start with 3 miles right off the bat because you also need to pay attention to your form and how you are running to keep your joints safe in the long run0 -

Yeah I def agree.. but i used to do a lot of running and have always been sporty.. so I do a lot of excercise anyway.. so physically relatively fit.. so started with 3 miles.. I really want to be able to do a marathon though ... one day.. but that is a way off at the moment..0 -

Hi.
What is HIIT - sounds interesting... I can currently run 5k.. although my time is not great.. I do it in 35mins.. and I really want to get that down.. but cant decide weather to try and get to running 10k first or to improve my time on the 5k run..what do you think?0 -

I would improve your time on the 5k run so you can do step by step sometmes its not good to do all at once because then you get discouraged0 -
