Mud runners!!! Questions about using HRM.

First off, yo, how you doing my people! :)

Second, have you used a HR monitor while trudging the muddy waters and if so, did it survive? I have a polar ft7, supposed to be water resistant. I used it for one mud race with lots of muddy waters (the Gladiator Assault if any of you know that one) and it survived just fine. Washed off the mud and it was good to go. But than on my next mud race (Merrell Down & Dirty), less muddy waters and more just plain mud so it got a bit more muddy. So anyway, yes, I get water resistant does not mean mud resistant. My watch works fine, but the transmitter seems to be not, well, transmitting anymore. I did change the battery. It takes awhile to find my HR but than it loses it. I get "00" and a message to check my transmitter.

Anyway, I have already accepted that I will buy another transmitter. I was just wondering if any of you have had success with a particular HR monitor in mud races? I may not always want to wear it, I just wanted to get an idea of how many calories I was burning.

Maybe next time I wear one, I put athletic tape around my chest over the transmitter and carry the watch in a plastic bag somewhere else on my body? Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Cant help ya, sorry. When I did a warrior dash recently I thought about brining my Garmin HRM with me, but decided against it. For more fear that I might loses it than the mud make it not work. I don't think ill wear it to the next one I do. May be some day Ill buy a HRM and dedicate it to mud runs

Yep. There's no way I'll take my garmin if I do one... I want to do the Super Spartan and, depending on time, I'm just going to compare the calorie burn to a trail race I ran recently... or a regular slow-pace jog. It's just one event.

Yes, I think you have to buy a new transmitter :(

I have done 2 mud races, and I didn't wear my Polar FT4 (which is supposed to be water resistant, I think). Seemed to risky for my $70 investment. I didn't really worry about the calories I burned that day.....I think I just put in like 20 minutes of jogging and 30 minutes of walking to cover what I figured I did on the course.

I'm planning on doing the zombie run and there's no way I'm taking my garmin. I spent a lot of $ on that, I'm not going to risk it getting ruined!

I have an update. IT WORKS!!!!!

So Polar DID pass the mud test, not once but twice! So I found out the reason it didn't work during my regular runs was because I was getting interference from my mobile device, with my running app and GPS signal. I just had to move my mobile device to a different part of my body (I moved it to my back) so it didn't interfere with the transmitter.

The Polar works fine after being in 2 mud races. I also had to take a brush to it and make sure the contacts were free of mud. But it's perfect now. High score for Polar!!!
