First 5k - outside!

Just ran my first 5k event. It was the Parkrun at Strathclyde Park.

For a treadmill runner, not having any idea of the pace was hard. I used my HRM to provide feedback on how hard I was working. I kept my rate about 161-163 for the race.

I can't say I enjoyed it but for the first time running I had about 5 mins where I was in my running zone. No need to worry about how fast I was going, falling off a treadmill or getting bored. Just me, my headphones and the path.

The upside was I managed it in less than 30mins. (It will get an official time tomorrow).

It's a good start and I have my 10k in 6 weeks so I should at least complete it. I am confident I should do that in about 70mins.

I love that I overtook all these people in the last 1km. I bet they were raging.

So I have set a PB and hope I can do more running. Not sure I will get much faster though.

Good job and a good time for a first outdoor run. I have a treadmill and use it a lot but it's completely different from running outside. On the treadmill you have no forward momentum and it seems to be harder to run shorter distances. Still good to have though for days when you can't be bothered going out or it's chucking down with rain.

As an aside I have never run in a competitive race and probably never will. Just like being out there on my own without people around me. Done plenty of 4+ mile runs but I don't want to be overtaken or shown up for going too slowly. Just want to be left alone to run at my own pace.
