I'm really unsure if im sabotaging my efforts of losing weight by indulging in this breakfast...it's one of my all time favourites! I usually have 1/3 cup of oats (110 cals), milk (60 cals), blueberries (50 cals), banana (45 cals)...is this too much to eat? I'm only short 5'4 and would be lightly active during the day, I stand on my feet with my retail job and try to do about 45 mins of exercise per day.

Thanks :)

It's 265 calories... no, it's not too much.
  • I think it sounds fine especially if you plan to add some exercise.
I get about 1200 cals a day and eat about 400 for breakfast which is pretty close to what you are suggesting.
  • I usually eat about 350-400 cals for breakfast. I guess it all depends on what you eat for the rest of the day too. You can talk to someone who says to eat a large breakfast, someone else will tell you to eat a smaller one. What is working for you?

I find if I eat a better breakfast, I am less snacky before lunch. It all evens out for me then.

Why would that be too much? It's not even one of those bad-for-you things and it's really low in calories.

Your progress is going to be largely determined by how much food you eat over long periods of time. If you are controlling your end-of-day intake (and I presume you are, since you're using MFP and probably tracking your intake) then how you choose to split those calories into meals really doesn't matter outside of personal preference.

    Cliffs: It's fine, enjoy.

Just looked at your diary though, is there a reason you are at 800 cals a day though?

Doesn't matter how much you eat at breakfast, overall calorie intake is what matters.

Gods no. That sounds like a delicious breakfast, and I generally eat at least half again (and sometimes twice) that. I'd tend towards a little more protein, like a couple of egg whites, scrambled, but that's just because I know I'm very susceptible to getting hungry an hour after eating mostly carbs.

Also, have to agree with the above about your diary. 800 calories seems really, really low for someone who has less than 20 pounds to lose.

That sounds fine. Pretty similar to what I eat actually, except I like to put flax or chia seeds in my oatmeal and I put almond butter on top.

That doesn't sound like alot:) I eat almost 500 calories for breakfast, I'm short too only 5ft, I consider myself lightly active too as I work as of last week three days a week, which I'm rushing around during but only workout 3 hours maximum a week, so I don't workout alot. Why have you set your goal to 800 calories though? I eat 2,000 and I'm still losing.
  • not even close to being too much. Like other people said, you are eating healthy things too. 800cal a day is barely enough for your body to function in a HEALTHY way. Be careful not to develop athletic anorexia tendencies.

One of the days last weekend I had *all* of my calories for the day (~2000) in one sitting at breakfast. This week I logged a weight loss for the first time in a while.

The issue is the total amount of food, not the timing of it. Calories and their deficit for loss of pounds, macros for the type of pound lost or gained.

    No worries.

Edit: I mistakenly suggested I only eat 200 calories in a day due to a typo. That would be a dangerous typo to leave because people around here would decide that's ok for a whole day of calories. It isn't. It isn't even ok for a snack, really.

And 800 calories in a day with the exercise you described IS ridiculous and not a good idea. Please see "In Place of a Roadmap 2.0"

NOT ENOUGH!!! You'll go into starvation mode!! <-- sarcasm....but seriously...use some common sense eating that low on a daily basis will not produce long term results. Deprivation never works.

    800 calories a day? Whyyyyyy?
  • I am gonna go ahead and say, good breakfast, but you should re-evauate your overall caloric needs. Unless you are being supervised by a doctor, 800 calories is low. Some people are going to come in here and say it isn't, but do you really plan on only eating that little forever?
