weighing/measuring your food

I always use my food scale for measuring meats and things but when the serving is half cup(Ice cream or potatoes, whatever) I use a measuring cup. I was curious if there was a difference between the scale and the measuring cup and there is. I get more using the scale. What does everyone else do? Do you measure different things differently?

I measure all of my solid food with a scale. All of my liquid with measuring cups.

With solid food, you never know if you're supposed to really pack the food into the cup or leave it loosely packed, etc. All the guesswork makes for a very inaccurate measurements. If I'm charging myself those calories, I want to eat them! Or, if I'm not charging myself for those calories, I don't want to eat them. Measuring by weight is much more accurate. That's why all of your packages of food say "product packed by weight not volume." Otherwise (if packaged by volume), companies would be constantly either cheating themselves or cheating their customers on the amount of product in the package.

I measure/weigh my food according to how the calories are measured on the package. Like, if it says 'Calories per cup', I use a cup to measure. If it says calories per oz., I'll use the scale.

Many times they will give the equivalent measure in grams... like 1/2 cup = 80 g... so I use that lead when I can.

I also use the scale to keep me honest. I can get a really big "half cup" of ice cream if I try. But the grams are the grams regardless of how tightly I pack the cup.

well to be honest I never measure haha, but I think this answer makes more sense cuz it depends on whats on the food label right?
  • Thanks for all the replies! I have lost 50 lbs and just want to maintain now, but I wondered if I was cheating myself out of food. The answers cleared things up, but is ice cream a liquid or a solid...haha!! I guess a solid since it's frozen!

Well, I noticed that a half cup on my scale is more ice cream than a hlaf cup measuring cup.

    Good rule to go by!

I started to weigh when I was making a sandwich one day and decided to throw the 100 calorie bread on there. Well it turned out to be more like 150 by the oz. "2 slices" of rye bread can differ in size.

On my scale I can put the plate on. Add the meat. then hit the button back to 0. then add my rice. hit the button back to 0. each time it gives me the weight of the new food. I forgot what he called it........but this works for me

That's exactly what I do! It's called 'taring'.

It'd be so hard to lose weight without a food scale.
