Coming back from an injury....

What is your experience in returning to the gym after an injury?

I've had quite the slew of bad luck with my ankle ( 3 surgeries, etc ). I am cleared to return the gym as long as I wear the ankle brace. I'd love to hear from others who have had injuries and worked around them.

All I can say is take it slow and really listen to your body! I had knee surgery in November. i was finally cleared after 4 mos of PT to resume normal activities. By then I'd lost so much conditioning running 10 minutes left me winded (prior to surgery I could do 10 miles!). Plus if I did over 10 minutes, or did something else on top of it that day like weight training or conditioning, my knee would give me grief for 2-3 days. It would stiffen up, swell a little, ache. Back to the ice, rest and anti-inflammatories for a day or 2, or 3 (how ever long it took), then back at it. In the beginning progress was slow, but here I am now 4 months into my normal routine and this past weekend I ran 90 minutes straight, then did a 46 mile bike ride the following day!

Just take it one day at a time. You want to push yourself, but not reinjure. As SelkieDiver said, listen to your body; you'll know when you've done too much. Dial it back a few when you get to that point.

I suffer from runner's knee (left) & tendonitiis in my (right) foot. I know when I've pushed too hard; and also when it's time to up the ante. But only trial & error have taught me that.
