Grapefruit Diet

Okay, so I have been reading everywhere that grapefruits are excellent for weight loss. Most people say you should have half of one before every meal. So I decided to do just that, this week...even if they can be sour as hell!!!

I've already noticed differences and its only been two days! I'm going to the bathroom more and I feel a lot lighter. Plus I've seen lbs drop on the scale (even though I know I shouldn't be weighing myself after two days). So, I'm happy. I am definitely seeing results.

IS ANYONE ELSE DOING THIS? HOW ARE YOU FEELING? HAVE YOU HAD ANY RESULTS?

Haven't heard of this diet before, but I have heard about the apple diet. Are you eating only grapefruit or having them with a meal?

I am eating it as a snack, before my breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. So, yes I am having regular meals, but I eat the grapefruit before them.

I heard apples are very good as well. People recommend an apple a day.

That definitely sounds very easy to do and probably reduces the urge to snack as well! I think I may give it a try!

Grapefruit is delicious. I believe eating it with a meal can also help you absorb essential nutrients, like iron. I have to be honest though, I was pretty sure that this thread was going to be about some kind of grapefruit only diet! I was thankful to see that you were just looking for a "boost" from it. Not sure of all of the science behind it, but as long as it fits into your day, why not!?

Do you reduce the amount of food you are eating during meals at all? Or just also eat a half grapefruit? I'm really intrigued by this!! I think I might try it too :)

Yeah, Exactly! Its a low cal snack and its a fruit and it can be delicious if you're lucky and find a sweet one (unless you like sour stuff). I dont think you'll lose anything if you try it...maybe just a few lbs ;)

half a grape fruit with breakfast will add a slight boost to your metabolism and give you a well rounded range of nutrients. but a diet focussed primarily on grapefruit is a FAD diet and will eventually lead to relapse and regain. which is what you want to avoid. Just maintain a balanced diet and include superfoods like grapefruits in moderation and you will see results either way. :)

I love grapfruit but it (like most fruit) has a considerable amount of sugar, which is fine in moderation. It sounds like you'd be eating 1.5 everyday. I would keep an eye on that.

I've never hear of this, but maybe I will give it a try. When I was pregnant I couldn't get enough grapefruit. It is one of my favourite foods. I just hate cutting it.

same here.. I always click on completely ridiculous titles LOL just to see what dumb things people are up to, but this makes sense, and I was glad to see it wasn't 'only eat grapefruits for so and so many days' I should try this =)

I dont reduce. I usually have a small snack before bigger meals anyway...so I dont pig out. When I feel full I just stop eating from the meal. I just eat half before my big meal...
and yeah you should! Let me know how it goes :)

this is the actual grapefruit diet plan if you follow it exactly u can and will loose 10-12 lbs in 12 days been there done that :)

    Grapefruit Diet Plan And Menus

The best thing about Grapefruit diet plan is that it helps one to lose approximately 10 pounds in 12 days and that too without controlling the appetite. The juice of the grapefruit encourages the fat burning process. Along with the exercise, which is part of the Grapefruit diet plan, useful results can be achieved.

Please note these things before taking a meal

Very hot or very cold foods should not be taken.

Food should not be cooked in aluminum pans

The duration between protein meals and starch meals should be at least 4 hours.

    Grapefruit Diet Breakfast Menu :

    2 eggs boiled

    2 slices of bacon

1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

    Grapefruit Diet Lunch Menu :

1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

    Salad

Any style meat in any amount.

    Grapefruit Diet Dinner Menu :

1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

Salad with or a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices.

Meat or Fish cooked any way.

    Coffee or Tea (1 cup)

    Bedtime Snack :

8 oz cup of skim milk.

The above plan will definitely suit you, but for a balanced diet that is really good for health, it is important to select small servings from each of the following five food groups to plan your daily menu:
Carbohydrates Fruits Vegetables Dairy Products Proteins
3-4 servings daily 4-6 servings daily 2-4 servings daily 1-2 servings daily 2 servings daily
Whole Grain Bagels, Corn Flakes, Low sugar cereals, Bran Muffins, Pasta, Rice, Whole Grain Bread, and Potatoes. Oranges, Papayas, Plums, Strawberries, Pears, Apples, Melons, Grapefruit and Bananas. Spinach, Peas, Corn, Salad, Cucumbers, Carrots, Celery, Asparagus and Broccoli. Cheese, Milk, Yogurt, and Cottage Cheese. Tuna without Mayonnaise, Crab, Lean Steak, Skinless Chicken, Fish, Beans, Lentils and Eggs.

I'm also glad this isn't a grapefruit only diet! That's the only one I've heard of. I'm glad you're feeling so great with this though!

I heard that if you cut them half and put them cut side down on a grill or in the oven, they become really, really sweet!
  • I love grapfruit but it (like most fruit) has a considerable amount of sugar, which is fine in moderation. It sounds like you'd be eating 1.5 everyday. I would keep an eye on that.

That's very true. Moderation IS key. Thanks! :)
  • Since it's rich in water, fiber and has a low amount of sodium, I'd say the grapefruit helps in weight loss because it's a filler food and will help you feel satiated, at the same time helping you eliminate water.

I've done a diet before with lots of grapefruit and eggs. Also has protein, fruit, salads that kind of thing and lost 10 lbs in a week. It it the type if you went back to eating normally the weight would just come back. Considered doing a variation of this one and hit my calories to see what it does, but I've been doing with what I've been doing so I haven't yet.

What do you mean with "eating normally"? Like without the grapefruit only or eating normally, like eating junk food, processed stuff etc...?

you dont encourage people to do that specific one or the one I mentioned?
  • I am a big fan of grapefruit and I can vouch for this. It really works.
What also works is eating whatever you want throughout the day (Within your calorie goal ofc, but lean towards clean foods) & for dinner you should only eat kiwi's and pineapples. It gives you instant results. It's has a great cleansing effect and helps you lose weight.

The expert consensus seems to be pretty clear: Don't bother with the Grapefruit Diet.

While nutritious grapefruit certainly can be part of a healthy weight loss plan, it contains no mysterious fat-burning properties.

The grapefruit diet, also known as the Hollywood Diet and erroneously as the Mayo Clinic Diet,[1] is a short-term fad diet that has existed in the United States since at least the 1930s

I think they're referring to that specific diet plan. I didn't read it, but if it's cutting out any food groups completely or limiting to only certain foods, I wouldn't follow it. I'm a pretty firm believer in getting in everything from individual food groups (or following the "plate" rule... half the plate should be veggies/fruit, 1/4 whole grains, 1/4 lean protein). Do I always do that? No. I'm not perfect. LOL But I try very hard to dip into every food group and make healthy choices. Now, like someone else said, watch your sugars especially if you're eating other fruit throughout the day and sugary items, but to be honest I don't pay attention to my sugar levels. I have zero health problems (no high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc) and I just started seeing a nutritionist who hasn't told me I needed to watch anything specific other than calories, carbs, and fats after taking a look at my diary. I'm going to ask my nutritionist next week what she thinks of the grapefruit before each meal though. :) If you are staying withing your calories per day and you're feeling good, keep it up!
