Disappointing Weight Loss Tip

I saw something on someone in my building's desk today... a friend had written down some weight loss tips for her. There was some good stuff including exercising, download MFP on her phone, eat right, etc.

Item #6 was REALLY disturbing though "If you eat something you shouldn't, GO THROW UP!" and I just shook my head... that's not weight loss, that's an eating disorder. I wish I knew her so I could say something to her, but I sincerely hope she's not really doing this!

  • I would take it down and take that off the list. WOW I would NEVER tell anyone to do that. I have thought about doing that in the past but knew if I started I would go to a place I didn't want to go.

I agree with you. I hope she doesn't do that.

i took a bite of a tootsie roll, chewed it for 10 seconds, then spit it out.

throwing up is a horrible idea.

you should have said something and i'm very sad and disappointed you didn't /shakeshead

I mean it is good advice...if you've suddenly swallowed something poisonous. But other than that? Yikes! No way! Not healthy!

I hadn't seriously considered the poison option... maybe they should be more specific and I'm overthinking it? LOL

Nah. It was diet tips, not tips on what to do in case of ingestion of a poisonous substance.

I would've taken my pen and scratched it off the list while she was away from her desk.

even if you don't know her please mention something to her

my teeth are destroyed and it is hard to keep food down (even if it is delicious) because of Bulimia. If you can, DO NOT allow this to be shared as a 'tip'

you are awesome to be concerned

Maybe you can make your own list, and replace it with the bad list!

I would write a friendly note and leave it on her desk. That IS really disturbing. I hope she AND her friend are okay...

The other tips were good, maybe it was a joke? I hope so...

Maybe she just misplaced the comma and it was supposed to read "If you eat something, you shouldn't go throw up!"

Actually, I like this idea... we don't work many hours the same and I could try to help anonymously so it doesn't seem confrontational.

    Thanks!

Not to be pedantic, but it's not always the best idea to throw up something poisonous... sometimes it can do more damage coming out, and it's better to eat something to soak up/neutralize it internally. Best bet is to keep the person who ingested it calm, and call the poison control center ASAP - unless you happen to have some handy WHMIS sheets nearby explaining what to do... and even then it's best to verify with poison control.

you don;t need to know someone to keep them or encourage them from doing something destructive

But who in his right mind would think of eating something poisonous unless he's on a suicide attempt which by itself is already a major problem.

Going back to the original post, I have some friends who have ED & I also had one many years back when I was a teenager. Although sometimes I see their post when they do b/p but I never once saw them actually giving that advice to people.

Normally I would agree, but work and positions definitely complicate some things... it's a different dynamic than just out on the street.

I personally see no harm in you approaching her and just saying that you happened to see the note and was concerned about the tip.

You also do not work in my HR department (that I know of). I'd prefer not to stray into the gray area, some people get pretty sensitive about things these days.

That is really sad. Especially because I always thought HR was to protect employees. She might ignore the tip, she might take it as a rule and begin down a terrible path. I don't have any more advice if you can't talk to her about it. :ohwell:

It's not about who's protecting who, it's about position and power level. I know that if my boss had something like that on her desk, I'd be hesitant to even MENTION it to someone else, let alone write her a note. My boss is on top, and I'm at the very bottom. And without evidence that she truly is doing herself harm, there isn't THAT much one could say or do.
