Heeeeeeeeelp!

Anyone out there have helpful tips for reducing sodium? I work 12 hour days and sometimes it is impossible for me to cook at home.

I'm sure there are a million topics on the message board on this subject...

But, any advice would help.

Thanks!

Just looking at your diary for the past few days, eating out is what's doing you in. Most canned foods are quite high in sodium as well. Chili and the like. More meals at home or made at home and brought to work will help.

Be very consistent about reading the labels on already-prepared foods. You can find lower sodium products, but some times you have to search for them. You have no control when eating out, however, and restaurant food is notoriously high in sodium.

Is it possible to make food ahead to freeze? I also like to cook a few chicken breasts every sunday and just slice some off to go on salads, sandwiches etc throughout the week. A salad or sandwich are as quick to put together as a wait in the drive thru. I also like to make big batches of pasta/stirfry/ taco filling etc and freeze in portions

The main culprit of high sodium for me is restaurants and prepackaged (canned, frozen, boxed) foods. The best way to reduce sodium is to prepare your food at home from as much fresh food as you can. When you work long days, I'd recommend taking your food with you rather than eating out.

Cook most if not all your meals in advance. Cooking a casserole for one is just as easy as it is for ten. By cooking more and portioning meals and freezing them, it wont be long that you'll have a nice stash of meals in the freezer just waiting for you to grab and heat.

Looks like you eat out a lot. Sodium is always going to be through the roof when eating out. Try cooking at home. You'll know exactly what is going into each dish. You control your outcome!

For medical reasons I have to limit my sodium to 1500. Salad dressings unless they say sodium restricted are very high. Paul Newman's Italian was over 700 for 2 Tbls and put me way over my limit because by the time I checked it I had eaten it. Here is a new food I just found out that is low in sodium and so good. I love Campbells and Hienz Tomato soup but the sodium is high. I tried Weight Watcher Tomato soup and add 2 TBLS of cream and there is no difference in the taste but a big difference in how much sodium is used. Weight Watchers soup is what I will be using for now on. Pasta sauce even low carb is very high in sodium so I have to make it myself which I do not mind because it tastes better and I can add more garlic, onion, red pepper as I want to do.

Be very cautious of Old El Paso taco, fajitas mixes or sauce I learned the hard way on that. I was shocked with Knorr chicken stock for soup over 2000 so now I buy the reduced sodium. I am a low carber so I like jerky, pepperoni sticks, but they are loaded with sodium so I cannot eat them. Jello sugar/fat free pudding over 300 sodium. It is insane how much sodium is in processed food.
