Just how old are these sweet potatoes?0

They should be fine as long as they are still firm. That's what they would look like if they had continued living underground.0

Precisely six weeks... last time I was in my apartment I wish I knew how to size a damn picture.0 -
You can plant them. Cut them into pieces, one sprout per piece, and plant 'em
EDIT: They'll grow darned near anywhere too...just make sure to pile more dirt over top of them as they grow so they don't sunburn.0 -
bury them in some compost....0

can you plant them!?
I don't have a yard, but why the hell not... I'll go put them in the park across the street.0 -

I love everyone's passion to save the sweet potatoes0

Plant them! We put some of our sprouted ones in our garden and now we have four cute sweet potato plants! Their leaves are neat -- different from russet, yukon, and red potatoes. I can't wait to dig them up when they're ready!0

If they are still firm, break the spuds off and cook 'em. If they are mushy, plant them at the park!0

SAVE THE SWEET POTATOES!0 -
They're still fine to eat as long as there are not any soft spots. Sadly, I let mine get like this often.0

That's how I grew mine! I left one in the pantry too long and it sent up four sprouts. I cut each one and rooted it in a cup full of dirt for a week or two and then put them outside in the ground. I think I got 4-6 sweet potatoes from each sprout. They will grow in poor soil and don't require pesticides. The leaves are beautiful and also edible and nutritious. The flowers are pretty great, too. They're actually in the same family as Morning Glories (not potatoes) and the flowers of the ones I grew looked like a pale purple Morning Glory. As a food crop, they're one of the best in terms of calories per square foot. Just make sure you keep them well weeded.
(if you can't tell, I kind of love sweet potatoes)0 -

found this online:
Sweet potatoes in the U.S. are grown mostly in the South. They are planted in the spring by "slips." These are the small rooted pieces of the vine that grow from the "eyes" or buds of the potato.
The sweet potato produces vine-like stems that resemble the philodendron plant. Place the sweet potato in a container of water. Keep the top 1/3 of the potato exposed by placing toothpicks into the sides. The pointed end should be down in the water. In a few weeks a vine with several stems will begin to sprout. The stems are weak; tie the stems to a stake.
Sweet potatoes like a bright, sunny location and require care like house plants such as ivy.
Fertilize about once a month.
If the sweet potato vine gets too long, cut it back a few inches to force the vine to get bushier. The tip of the vine that was pinched off can be rooted in water or moist soil.
Your sweet potato vines can be planted outside in late May to produce sweet potatoes that can be dug and eaten in the fall.
