hi, I'm hoping that someone can set me straight... So my base calories are set for 1200, and then I exercise and MFP does the math and comes out with NET calories. So today my net is 1020.... now here are my questions, what are NET calories? and does that number need to be near my BMR which when I calculated it, it was 1550?
I'm sorry, just starting out and trying to understand.

Net calories are the number of calories you've eaten minus the number you've burned0

Check out the following link. It was very helpful to me, you may need to re-read a couple of times. Basically I did the ~1200 calories for a month and losing 20lbs to upping the calories to 1800-2000 when I hit a plateau. I am now losing ~.5-1 lb/day and feeling much better - no headaches, no grouchyness. Take time to look at other threads, talk with doctor to figure out where you should be.
