exercise instructors?

Hey all,

I just did my training on the weekend to be a groove instructor.
It's a dance class, mixture of latin, urban and club.

I have the steps down pat, and I'm fine practising a script at home in my own bedroom but once I get on stage I can dance but completely forget what to say. Is this something which will just take time and practise or is it not cut out for everyone?

I want to know the answer to this too. But I just recently got certified to be an Instructor and I've been looking up "cueing". It helped when I had to do my "instructional" part in front of the whole group. But I'm afraid I'll freeze up when I teach a real class.

I really hope it's just a matter of practise :S What classes do you wanna teach?

I'll be teaching TurboKick and HipHopHustle. If this goes well I plan on getting certified in Zumba, Body Pump and PiYo too! I just have to get out there and do it. Do you already have a class? I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like this. :)

If it's anything like teaching in a classroom setting, you will get better with practice, so practice away!

Practice will help tremendously. I also recruited friends to take "classes" from me and give me critiques. Basically, I'd gather my friends (1 or 2 is fine) and teach them a class. This gave me practice and they gave me feedback on what cues worked what didn't and so on. You'll do great!!

I have been doing this, but with friends I'm fine but then I teach a class and completely forget all my cues :(

I've been an fitness instructor for about 7 months now. I started with step aerobics, then got certified in R.I.P.P.E.D. and teach that now too. A lot of people recommended getting someone to practice with, but I could never find anyone to do this. What I normally do is put my music on my iPod, head to the gym, and do the routine a few times, mumbling the cues to myself. I don't teach something until I'm really comfortable with it. It's hard when you're first starting out because you watch the people in your class and can't help but wonder what they think of you. You really just have to tune everything else out and focus on the music and the moves. Good luck and don't give up!

You don't find people look at you weirdly when doing that at the gym?
    Also, what is R.I.P.P.E.D?

One of my instructors for Body Pump arrives at the gym an hour before class and does the whole routine (even adding in the motivational words she uses in the real class) before class starts. I think it may just be a matter of practicing. Go over the routine over and over and over while adding in the instructions you would normally tell your class.
