Running in the rain

I have a 5K in the morning. The forecast is for 30% chance of rain, 97% humidity. I'm new at racing, so my question is, should I wear anything different just in case it rains?

    Embrace the rain!

Running in the rain is amazing....

Except for when your shoes/socks get soaked.

Just remember to body glide everything you can

I ran a 10K in the rain in October. Freezing. Rain in July will keep you cooled down.

Hat or visor to minimize rain in the eyes. Otherwise, since it's warm weather, run like a kid playing in the rain!! If it was 45 and raining I'd say bundle up a bit. But this race should be fun. :-)

Well it sounds like it's not going to be a total downpour so you should be ok with whatever you wear. The humidity should awful tho! I always wear a dri fit type hat and dri fit top, especially when it's going to be wet, it helps wick some of the moisture away. Sopping wet socks and shoes are the worst tho, but power through those puddles and have a great run!!!

Enjoy the rain, it'll feel good. Just wear a hat of some sort to keep the rain out of your eyes. And make sure you don't wear anything too loose to prevent chafing if you get wet!

    PS... have a great race!

Not a whole lot you can do about staying dry other than what kerricolby said, wear a hat to keep the rain off your face. Wear as little clothing as possible to avoid getting bogged down. I also would avoid wearing a cotton t-shirt.

I don't know what you normally wear, so hard to say.

Are we talking warm rain or cold? Either way, I would avoid cotton clothing - gets heavy when it's wet. Go for the wicking fabrics that won't become heavy and will dry quickly - that goes for socks too! You might want a visor or ball cap to help keep rain out of your eyes - sunglasses too, even if it's overcast.

If it's cold, they say figure on being 10º warmer than the outside temp while running, so if it's 70º, dress for 80º. Maybe bring dry clothes to change into after the race in case you get soaked.

If the course is on a street, try to stay to the middle as the water will run to the sides towards gutters.

    Have a great race!

I agree on a hat....also cotton socks are a blister waiting to happen! My trail shoes do better in the ran than my regular running sneakers so I usually use those if rain is in the forecast! :)

Have fun....I actually enjoy running in the rain, makes me feel like a kid again! :)

I will quote everyone's answers above me. I totally agree.

Running in the race is great..except for the wet socks and shoes. I ran this morning in the rain...great.

Wear a baseball cap to keep the rain out of your eyes. Also helps keep the sweat out of your eyes.

Since its July and humidity is as high as it is, wear something that wicks away sweat. Wear sunscreen cause even when the sun isn't out..its there.

Drink water both before, during and after the race. Hydrate well.

Race according to how your body feels. Go slow when need and speed up when you can.

And above all else, have fun! Running, especially in a race, is meant to be enjoyed. Compete only against yourself and have fun.
  • A light running top/jacket with a hood.
Also take another pair of shoes and socks for the trip home, especially if the run is muddy !

Most of all, ENJOY it !!!!!!!!

Use body glide, lotion or solid antiperspirant on your feet and any other rub areas. It work great especially for runs in humid or rainy conditions. Good luck!
  • You might want to leave the White T-shirt at home???

I don't mind running in the rain, but I NEED double-layer runningsocks or I get blisters. So long as your clothes are breathable you'll be fine with the humidity/rain, but if you don't have good running socks you should go get some!!

Of and for the sunscreen comment... if its rainy (or insanely hot) I don't put any above my eyes and wear a hat to shade my forehead.. then I avoid the burning eyes.

And don't ferget a towel to leave in the car, or a very water proof bag.

    Have fun!

Thanks everyone. Those are great ideas. I didn't even think about a hat or visor or the fact that cotton would get soaked and be heavy and yucky. I'll take whatever comes in stride!

The last time I ran in the rain was one of the first runs in my Vibram Five Fingers. I felt like a little kid running barefoot through the puddles. It was awesome.

I normally wear dri-fit or under armour shirts and shorts when I run so I don't change anything for running in the rain. I don't wear a hat or visor but have wished I did when running in the rain to keep it out of my eyes. I leave my iPod/iPhone behind when it's raining as I don't have a waterproof way to carry it.

Someone mentioned running socks. I just run in little footies. I guess they are cotton. What are running socks and where do I get them?

They aren't made of cotton. You can get them at any athletic store. Nike, Underarmour, all the major brands make a synthetic sock.

    Cotton is rotten!

In the summer when I sweat a lot or when it is raining I carry large trash bags in the car to cover the seats when I drive home.

My wife made me do it after I left a sweat soaked car seat once.
