Advice to combat workout nausea?

Options
Hey Everybody!

I started Chalean Extreme this morning. I got up at 5 A.M to exercise. I didn't eat...just got up, threw on some workout clothes and went to the den.

I was exercising and feeling great. I took a drink of water, went back to the exercise and BAM I was hit by a giant wall of nausea. I had to sit out for a little, and push through the very last part of the video. My body wasn't hurting, and I could have finished the program if not for the nausea. This has never been a problem for me before, granted I have not exercised in about 3 years....and usually it was in the late morning. I did 40 days of P90X with no nausea at all and then we moved, and I didn't start back. (BAD!)

Any suggestions? I'm baffled and would really appreciate some help.

Do you monitor your heart rate when you exercise?

It's probably because you haven't exercised in three years.

Ok, so what should I do about it? Nothing I can do about the last 3 years....this is why I'm here.

ETA...I'm not trying to be a jerk or defensive. I am quite aware of how I got here... I just don't know what to do to stop it so I can exercise the way I want to/used to.

This might be tough for you if you're working out in the early AM, but maybe try to eat something before you workout? My trainer has always advised me to have a small snack (preferably with protein in it) 60 to 90 minutes before our sessions, and that really helps me. That way my body has some fuel to run on. I've noticed that if I don't eat, or if I eat too soon before my session (like 30 minutes before), I get nauseous. I also drink plenty of water and workout in a well-ventilated area (near a fan if possible), especially in the summer heat.

Firstly.. Congratulate yourself on getting up at 5AM and making the gym :)

As another poster said, try a light snack such as banana/protein shake/other fruit. Lower your intensity in the class so you can finish the whole class. Then increase it when you're ready.

If a small snack doesn't work, you could try a protein shake or chocolate milk. I gulp a few sips of chocolate milk before my 4:30 workouts, and I'm usually fine.

    Good luck!

I know when I first bought a bike again, I struggled with nausea. And admittedly I still sometimes have it if I increase a ride significantly over my last longest ride (35 miles in 90 degree heat, for example. Yuck.)

Just keep it up. I quit for a while way back when because of it. When I started again, I just had to keep trying, and it improved. I'm not the type of person to handle heat well, so I try to plan around it. But keep trying. Don't give up. It will improve!

Also, sometimes I chew mint gum on a bike ride, which settles your stomach a bit.

    Good luck!

Even a light snack makes it more likely that I end up sick. I can't even down a full glass of water before I leave, or I'll have to stop the bike and sit on the curb. Try it, it may work for you, but it certainly does not work for me. Even just a banana, slice of toast - I just can't for at least half an hour beforehand.

I felt like puking every time I got back from lifting when I started up again this year (especially on lower body heavy days). It should subside when you get more trained for your routine.

He is right. Your body is adjusting again. If you ever see players starting training camps for whatever sport, if they're not in shape, you will hear or read or even see certain people vomit. Keep at it, and you will notice that it will go away. If you feel that way with an empty stomach, don't put anything in it either.

I have always exercised several times a week and I get queasy if I do anything that has my head bobbing up and down too much. Sit ups, those mountain climbers, suicides, etc. I saw a few specialist everyone thought it was hormonal or an inner ear issue. sooo many test and sooo much money later, they have declared me perfectly healthy with nothing at all wrong with me. Yep, too bad I still get sick to the point of actually throwing up. If you find a cure, please pass it along. Mine started out of no where about 4 years ago and the doctors are of absolutely no help.

These symptoms are sometimes indicitive of a high heartbeat or blood pressure. Not knowing your current state of health or fitness, or when you last had a physical, it may be worth looking into to rule it out. A heart rate monitor will ensure that you stay within your peak rate and help deliver maximum benefit from your workouts.

I had the same issue and it was my blood pressure. In your case, it may be as simple as too much too soon.

Thank you everybody. I really appreciate you guys helping me find a solution! I'm going to put the suggestions to work tomorrow, and I've ordered a heart rate monitor. :) It should be here monday or tuesday at the latest!

After breakfast and a midmorning snack, I did a zumba workout with my kids on the wii and had no issues. We'll see!!

    Thank you all again.
