I'm glad you asked. I think that is far far far to low. To give you an idea I've lost 30 lbs at the rate of 1 lb a week with the following stats:

    age: 29
    height: 5'7
    goal weight: 120
    activity: Sedentary
Calories I ate a day to get there: 1650 plus exercise calories

The more active you you are, the more calories you can eat. Keep in mind that you may also gain muscle which makes you thinner but you'll weigh a heavier weight. I've seen 200 pounders on here with abs.
The heavier you are, the more you can eat and lose at the same rate. MFP assumes that you have to cut 500 calories a day to lose one lb a week which isn't exactly how it works.

I think you have that set for a agressive unrealistic rate. I suggest being supervised by a professional if you plan on going on a very low calorie diet. A friend of mine did it and it involved him getting very sick and being well supervised and taking needles. The daily value according to Canada Health and the FDA for a women is around 2000 calories. I usually have about 2200 and can maintain 120 pounds.

To lose weight eat anything below your TDEE (Total daily energy expenditure). You can get this value estimated by a doctor or some gyms. You can also estimate it via a few calculations (there are calculators online). To find out what your TDEE is, look up information about your BMR.

In summary, there was a scientific paper published based on the quantification of the effect of energy imbalance on bodyweight. The authors of this study made this addorable little calculator that lets you play with all the numbers mentioned above. They take the changes in the human metabolism into account, looking at the fact that a 3500 calorie deficit equaling 1 lb of weight loss isn't that percise (which is what mfp uses to calculate it's values).

    Study: http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(11)60812-X/fulltext
Calc: http://bwsimulator.niddk.nih.gov/ <-go here and enter your info to get a fairly accurate number to go by If you plan on losing a large amount of weight, enter a smaller number and go back periodically when you get close to that goal.

If losing 2 lbs/week would be motivating to you and keep you on plan, I think it's fine. It's definitely fine to try it and see how you feel at that intake level. It's not like you couldn't also lose at 1500 or even 1700 (probably), if it's not enough food for you. But some people would rather start aggressive and then back off, not start pokey right out of the gate.
  • Sounds a bit low to me. You will probably lose weight that way, but it would be difficult to keep it off! Slow and steady is best.
  • mfp gave me only 1200.. but juszt dont go over 1500 because since were not very active it stores the fat. also onlyy eat when yuhr hungry and chew slowly because when yuhr not hungry and yuu eat it stores it as fat!!

In all honesty, it all depends on what you eat. I eat fairly clean (5'8, 240 CW) and 1300 is great for me. Plus when you exercise, you get more calories to eat. I'm laid up now so I stay fairly close to 1300, but on days that I exercise, I can get up to 2000 calories.

The longer you're here, the more you'll find what works for you!

Good luck! You can add me for support if you'd like! :)

If you keep it at 1300 NET and not total, then yes it's probably good for a start. Don't exercise it down to 500 net though. That would likely be determental to your goals.

I am5 ft 3in and 224lbs (I have lost 38lbs so far) I eat on a sedentary day 1870 cals. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/654536-in-place-of-a-road-map-2-0-revised-7-2-12 I found this to be extremely helpful.

I ate 1500 cals and quickly stalled in weight loss.

    Good Luck

I would absolutely set a slower weight loss goal, eat 1600 - 1800 wholesome calories and aim to burn a good 2100 - 3000 through exercise per week. You'll then be getting close to an overall 7K/week calorie deficit (2 lbs) and should start losing more than the "goal" setting (if set to 1/2 to 1 pound/week).
1300 won't kill you but you will also need to be SURE not to eat less than that and probably eat back an additional few hundred calories on workout days (don't care what the calorie deficit of workout says - 2 lbs being the max realistic goal per week, you have no room for a greater deficit in general). Also, it COULD be detrimental so you would really need to monitor how you were feeling, and psychologically make sure you were getting this from high-volume, high-quality, low-nutrient-density foods to feel full and not deprived. It's possible for sure, but just might not be the best overall daily goal for intake.

I think this is incorrect. 2 lbs a week is not overly agressive for someone with quite a bit to lose (no offense inteneded OP). It's a good healthy rate. And 1300 NET is not a very low calorie diet. It's quite easy to get proper nutrition on 1300 calories per day.
  • I eat between 1290 and 1350 a day.
And I have lost 75 lbs since November. I am not hungry nor do I feel deprived..
I work out every day at the gym as well. I think it depends on the person and what you are comfortable with.
    Good luck!!!!

I agree with this. I think it's a good place to start for now, as long as you eat most of your exercise calories and don't feel deprived or weak. If you find it really hard to stick with, know that you can eat more and still lose.

But after losing say 20-30 pounds, you should probably alter your weekly goal to lose 1.5 or 1 pound a week.

I agree with the 2 lbs comment, but you can lose 2 lbs without cutting 1000 calories out of your intake a day like mfp wants you to do. When I came here mfp put me on 1200 calorie diet to lose a pound a week. I did. And then I jumped up to 1650 and still lost a pound a week...then I jumped up my activity level and managed to lose a pound a week a 2200 cals a day. Why bother trying to eat as little as humanly possible? Especially since it's harder to get your nutrition from 1300 calories and to feel energized at that amount.

My point is you can eat a lot more and still lose a ton of weight. Just know that.

I think as long as your eating the right foods (vegetables and fruits) And eating every 2-3 hours that 1300 should be okay. If you like fish and salads that's the route to go to feel full. But if your hungry EAT, just make good choices.

I think it is too low. Find out your BMR. Eat above it.

    Great tool: http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/

It can help you figure out how much you should eat including your activity (exercise and ect).

I bought myself bodymedia fit. I am amazed how much I burn daily. I burn 2700 almost every day. I am 5'10" and 140 lbs. I eat at least 2300 calories a day.

SOME people can eat more and still lose. Not everyone loses that the same rate. Personal examples are not necessarily applicable to others.

I've tried this on the 1200 calorie diet. I admit, I felt less starved eating 1200 calories minus all the processed crap but that could be due to all kinds of reasons. But I garantee you I feel much better eating 2200 calories now and I have no problem eating salads 5 times the size of the ones I use to eat. I to used the 'but I eat healthier' excuse. You can eat healthier without resorting to small amounts of rabit food.

MFP has me set at 1200 and I eat back about half my workout calories. Averaging about 1500 total calories eaten a day. I have lost 2lbs a week very consistently. I have energy and feel great. My two cents: if you aren't feeling sluggish and grumpy, and your losing... I think it's fine where you are at. Give it a try for a couple weeks and if you aren't happy, play around with your numbers. Best of luck to you!

The calculators for body fat are aweful (look at my profile I listed all of them and they are quite different). If I were you I would work out my bmr without the fat percentage and keep in mind its higher. Remember the bmr number isnt your weight loss number. If you got clocked in the head and passed out for a day thats how many calories your body would use without moving an eyeball. If you sit up you burn way more. To find out what you can eat without gaining find your tdee. Sedentary is bmr*1.2 so your more then that. Keep in mind thats a lot of calories your cutting. If you feel starving eat a little bit (unless you tell yourself there is a reason to suffer). You'll still lose weight
