put on 1lb and I don't know why

Hi, I'm new to MFP and started 2 weeks ago. I've a long way to go but started quite well with 4lbs lost over the 2 weeks. I've a calorie goal of 1210 and i've topped it up with light exercise (as I've arthritis and can't do too much jumping around) on average about 100 calories burnt through exercise per day. However I am finding it hard to eat 1210 calories and a few days this week i've been 300 down on a couple of days (including the exercise added calories) But the last couple of days i've been about 70 down. I'm being honest and strict and putting everythng i'm eating on the diary so I'm a bit dishearted that I've gained.
I am going to stick with it because I NEED to do something but this has happened before. Last year I exercised an hour a day (Zumba and Walking pre arthritis) and eat healthily and didn't loose a damn lb for well over a month ... Can anyone give me some tips and some motivation to keep going :)

firstly, you're a woman so your weight is going to fluctuate (periods, water weight, etc) so dont worry about 1lb so much cus some women fluctuate as much as 8lbs a month because of "aunt flo"

second, WTG on your first week! I lost 4lbs on my 1st week too and then only 0.2lbs so it was kind of a bummer but dont give up! I lost another 2lbs!

third, you can add me if you like :-) I love to cook and am alwasy coming up with something good and healthy to eat/drink/snack on

I don't know about you but my weight fluctuates by a few lbs throughout the day anyway so I'd try not to worry about 1lb. Also, perhaps you're not eating enough? I'm new to this myself and I'm sure someone will be along soon who can shed a bit more light on the matter but on the days I've been around 1200 cals I've not lost but when I get up a few 100 higher I drop weight.
Also, try and measure your success by, well, measuring rather than the scale. And remember, even if you don't see the results as quick as you wanted on the scale you are still doing good work, making your body healthier!

thanks :) I think it could be that I'm not eating enough. MFP put my goal calories at 1210 I think cos i'm only 5ft2 and i have found i'm learning so much more about food and calorie values. I'm definitely going to try to stick at it and having a community of support helps :)

I don't entirely trust the scale because sometimes its just water, I weighed myself a couple of weeks ago and the scale said I had gained weight, so I measured myself and compared to what I had entered in MFP, and sure enough I lost 3 inches of my waist and an inch off of my hips!

Don't worry about 1 pound. My weight goes up and down 1-2 pounds throughout the day. Just keep working at it. The weight will come off, just don't give up.

I'm 5'3" and eating 1500 which already factors in a reduction in calories so I can loose weight. I think when you have not so much to loose and you're little like us MFP just puts 1200! Try eating 100 cals more a day for awhile and see what happen.

thanks everyone :) I think i'm gonna try taking Urglewurgle's advice and up the calories. I've changed my goal to lose 1lb a week rather than 1 and a half and it's upped my calories to 1400 odd so if i can try to eat that much i should hopefully see a change. I guess it's all trail and error finding what suits :)

OK let me put this in perspective for you like someone did to me and it was the best thing that EVER happened to me, 1lb is about 500grms....your weight can fluctuate as much as 5 pounds in one day......the scale is the LEAST productive way to measure your weight, there are SO many other factors that come into it....so my advice is throw the scales away.....I did it 12months ago and have never looked back...when i weighed myself once a week it determined what mood I would be in, I decided I didn't want to be dictated to by a number, I weigh the same as i did when I got married 8 years ago, and when I look at the pictures I am a totally different body shape, I have muscle, i was skinny fat before....when I look in the mirror and I like what I see is when I know it have reached my goal....:o) PS, I have gone down 4 dress sizes! you will know by your clothes...:o)

No way! The scale is an excellent tool for judging your progress - in fact it's possibly the best way available to the majority

For example, everybody GUESSES their BMR based on certain factors. We have no idea if it's lower than or higher than we think. There is several methods and all result in different 'guesses'.

We have even less idea as to what our energy expenditure is! Heart rate monitors are best but even those are calculations based on further guesses.

I want to maintain my current weight so I accurately record all exercise and calories - more guesses

The only way that I can accurately track whether my calories in do indeed equal my calories out is by stepping on the scale. Every couple of days is a good indication for me, however I do concede that women's weight fluctuates more than a guys

    I wrote a Thread about me gaining 15lbs...with a 1lb week weight loss goal...eating 1750 calories a day at 107kg / 235lbs!

So I know what you feel.

I have started since yesterday eating 1300calories...will do it for a week...and see what happens before I scream???!!!

That fact justifies weighing yourself only every week, it doesn't justify NEVER weighing yourself!

Yeah I guess thats the beauty of everyones experiences, they are just that OUR experiences and if "my" experiences can help even one person from having to go through what I have over 24 years of battling eating disorders, body image issues etc then I will continue to put my experiences out there...:o)

Congratulations on choosing to get healthier. Personally, I would not worry about a pound gained.. As others have stated weight can fluctuate during the course of a day plus over night... depending things like sodium intake ...eating later at night and other things. So last night for example I ate shoneys salad seafood bar...knowing I should have stopped with the salad. This a.m. I woke up feeling heavier and weighed two pounds more.. I'm not stressing because give another day or two and my weight. Will be back to 189.. sodium is Sooooooo not my friend. Best wishes and keep on taking good care of yourself and don't ever throw the towels in. Listen to your body. Btw. I like to weigh daily. I'm addicted to my scale.. sometimes two three times a day..

Well that's fair enough; however you're advsing someone who simply wants to shed a couple of pounds to throw their scales away based on your experiences as someone who has battled an eating disorder

Isn't that like somebody asking what wine should they serve with fish, and a recoverng alcoholic saying "Pour the wine down the sink!"?

Congratualtions on your massive successes though

I went up 3 lbs in one day and really did nothing different. Lost 2 of it the next day. It's just something that happens and it will go away.

I do think weighing especially when your weight fluctuates can be dishearting and I have more than a couple of lb's to loose. So I think the best way not to let a little gain put me off track is to not weight myself first few weeks and see how i go. I've gone on numerous diets and also have disordered eating so i think my metabolism has been overly confused all the years of binge starve binge starve and because i've gone under a fair few days by about 300 cals it's holding onto everything... I'm doing it the healthy way now and I am going to stick to it and try to meet my calorie goal every day. So I will take onboard the suggestion of not weighing (for a few weeks ) and going by my clothes and see how I do...
Thanks everyone for the support I was feeling really miffed but now I feel back on track :)
