Cereal cravings.. any ideas?

I have had the most horrible craving for cereal lately! Problem is, I can never have just one bowl.. or even just two bowls.. I am a cereal addict. I make my husband hide his otherwise I will eat the entire box in a day. I have been daydreaming about cereal all day. It's awful! Totally the bane of my existence. And of course the ones I crave are the really bad ones.. Cap'n Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch..etc
So my question is.. if any of you are as crazy about cereal as I am, what do you do to combat the craving? What sort of low cal things can I eat instead that will satisfy this godawful urge to plow through an entire box?

Kashi has awesome 'good for you' selections in cereal......and they have lots of protein and fiber in them too......and, might I suggest......don't have the stuff in your home and you won't be tempted to eat it!! Thats what I've realized I have to do! Hope this helps some!0

Low sugar muesli or granola - lots of oats so good for balancing sugar levels. Or search the web for some good healthy home made cereal bar recipes. It's the sugar in what you're eating that's making you crave them so! I understand as I love Golden Grahams, which haven't touch my lips in 7 months.0

I seem to have the same problem with cereal so I try to avoid it. One bowl just doesn't fill me up, and I will (and have before on multiple occasions) eaten an entire box.
However, I have found in the past that making a casein protein shake with the Almond Breeze I'd be using in my cereal helps make me feel fuller. I also try to eat it slower. Throw in some willpower, and I can step away from it after one bowl.
Honestly, though.. Until I gain some self-control again, cereal and I aren't speaking. :P
Edited to say that you should shoot for "better for you" cereals with more nutritional value if you can. I love Kashi's original Go Lean.0 -
eat all bran , you'll be sat on th loo all days so wont be able to at the really nice cereal lol :laugh:0

bran flakes is low in cals, or muesli, although im addicted to muesli now and cant just have one bowl if im in a snacking mood. But it does fill you up.0

I mix 1/2 cup of Kashi golean with no fat plain greek yogurt. gives me some crunch and sometimes i add a few fresh cherries or berries. try it. it is filling and gives me the crunch of cereal.0

i have the same problem--cereal is a total trigger food for me. i become an absolute carb/sugar monster after eating sugary cereal.
my suggestions are to find yummy low sugar cereals (in the health food store) like kashi or natural puffed rice/spelt cereals and dole out individual portions into containers or plastic bags. that you way you can grab one and eat it as a snack (NOT for breakfast--totally not filling!) and feel like you've had a treat. i personally don't find success in going cold turkey from foods that i LOVE...i just start thinking about those foods all the time if i'm totally deprived.
good luck!0 -
I eat the cereal.
I normally add it to a bowl of protein sludge made with whey & greek yoghurt or cottage cheese.0 -
Probably best to not have it in. Maybe buy some plain oats and flavour it with some natural goodies x0

I think I will try a Kashi cereal next time I go grocery shopping.. I have never had any of them since they tend to cost more than other cereals, but maybe that will trick me into making it last through the week. I also like the idea of adding a little bit of cereal to Greek yogurt, instead of a regular serving size with almond milk. Greek yogurt really fills me up which might stop me from plowing through an entire box of cereal thanks for the suggestions!!0

I really like Special K Honey and Almonds. I was not fond of Kashi.0

I would say Wheaties or Multi Grain Cheerios0

Be careful with the Kashi cereal if you are sensitive to fiber.
Actually. Go ahead and eat all the Kashi cereal you want. It will make you not want to eat cereal ever again.0 -
Kashi and actually all cereals come in nifty containers with one serving in them. You could just buy one container and then you would have to stop at just one cup0

Sounds like it's sugar rather than cereal you are craving, given that list, so try to avoid giving in often. Consider these cereals to be treat foods, just like chocolate and icecream, and eat them at the same times you might otherwise eat those (i.e. dessert, not breakfast). In the morning, try healthy cereals, and enjoy them: oats, bran, unsweetened muesli (pick varieties not too loaded up with dried fruit, though a little fruit is good). A 40g serve of porridge or all-bran with skim milk and just a tablespoon of dried fruit is a really filling, healthy meal that will keep your energy levels up and (once you are used to it) keep down the sugar cravings.0

I avoid the stuff like the plague since its a serious binge food for me. Like I would used to have two large bowls of bran-flakes with three tablespoons of brown sugar everyday after school.0

I don't know. I have the same problem. I can't have any food in the house but single serving or I will just eat it all. Its so easy to fail...sigh. Especially when you dont have the money for the more expensive cereals.0

LOL I too am a lifelong cereal junkie. I loved all the good ones, Cap'n Crunch, Frankenberry, Quisp and Quake (remember those? I liked Quake, my brother liked Quisp), Froot Loops, Sugar Pops (I imagine not called sugar pops now LOL) Frosted Flakes, Reeses, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch (One of the top three ever!)
I finally just matured away I guess from the sugary stuff and now do the Kashi and I also like the 130 calorie Honey Bunches of Oats varieties.
I have to force myself to eat a SMALL BOWL and not keep pouring more cereal on the milk.
I think if you want to curb this addiction you are going to have to really work on it. From one mature cereal junkie to a much younger one all I can say is.. Good luck with that. LOL.

Reese's Puffs.....My fav....I just don't buy it! I eat the Kashi, which is more like cardboard, but it is "good" for me!:sad:0

I had a dream last night about that Reese's cereal.. LOL. I dreamt that I went to go eat some and looked at the nutritional information and it was 700+ calories a serving and that itself deterred me from binging on it. Ha! That actually used to be my favorite when I was little.. and Oreo O's.. OMG. I haven't seen Oreo O's in years. I used to eat the whole damn box in a day.. and I still would if I ever saw it being sold out here.. thank goodness it isn't.0
