I want to start using hand weights, around 2 kilos and getting up to five kilos, but I'm worried about the scales going up? I. Really confused, about using weights please help!

Be more concerned about body fat % rather than the number on the scale. Once you start lifting and reap the benefits, no one will care how much you weigh because of how good you will look.

So will the scales go down when I use weights as well as going up?

It's possible you'll see the scale go up, especially initially or if you're already at a low bf%. Most people can put on a max of 0.5 lbs of muscle a week (usually less for women), and that's if your routine and diet are optimized. You can, however, expect to see some water weight from swelling if you work very hard. With hand weights, even that shouldn't be much of a problem.

The scale is just a tool. It doesn't tell you how fit you are, how big you are, how much body fat you have, or how good you look. Other great tools include a measuring tape and a mirror :).

So if I use a measuring tape will I still lose inches?

I would not expect your weight to go up. I am guessing your purse and many other things you carry around every day weigh much more than that.

Hand weights don't add fat. Period.
