Can any hippy ladies out there help me?

Hi All, I'm hoping someone out there has an idea for me. So I've always been a hippy girl...That is I have an hourglass figure, which means very small waist in comparison to hips and thighs! Unfortunately, this makes finding pants that fit really hard because I can't stand wearing pants that don't fit in the waist. So this has made finding dress pants a nightmare because they never ever fit right....I finally found a cut of pants from Lane Bryant that fit well years ago and have always stuck with them. However, since I've lost weight Lane Bryant clothing is now too big for me, which is great, except that my only dress pants are now WAY too big to get away with wearing so I have to get more for work. I find looking for them incredibly frustrating because if they fit in the legs, they are huge in the waist. I generally give up on trying them on after the 5th or 6th pair that doesn't fit and shopping is not my favorite thing. So I'm starting to fear that I'm going to have a need for dress pants in the near future and won't have anything appropriate. Does anyone out there have a similar figure and has found a brand, style, cut, etc that is flattering and not super expensive. I'd like to not spend more than $50 a pair because money is tight and I don't expect them to last very long. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't have the same figure, so I can't be of much help there. But have you tried Express or H & M? They tend to have a wider range of sizes for not being exclusively a fuller figured store.

    Good luck!

I have 2 possible solutions for you. There is a chain called Fashion Bug. They have a website, if there are no stores near you. They offer distinctly different cuts for pants to accomodate the situation you describe. They call the cut "curvy" I think.

I was also in JC Penneys and Sears in the last couple of days. One of them appeared to have a style of pants for the "curvy" figure. Unfortunately, I can't remember which store as I was in both of them the same day.

    Good luck.

:flowerforyou: What is your actual size? I love Torrid, they go as low as size 12, and you can shop online. I don't have your figure but my sister and 2 best friends do and that is where they go.

Also, alot has changed in the last 50 years. But we used to all have our hair set and styled weekly and visited the Tailor. You may have to find a great Tailor to help you out, this is a VERY common issue with many women, and though it is an extra cost imagine if you found a great pair of slacks at Torrid for $8 and you took them to a Tailor for alterations for say up to $20 or so (not sure the cost where you are). You basically have a great fitting pair of pants! So buy them fitting in the tuckus and thighs and have them work the magic for you!

Just a thought, congrats on losing the weight and good luck

I've never tried H&M since the closest is in San Francisco, but maybe I'll try express! Thanks for the ideas : )

I've definitely heard of Fashion Bug, so I'll see if I can find one nearby. "Curvy" is definitely the best descriptor. I'll try Penneys and Sears too! Thanks soo much!

Currently it's unclear : p)....... I always wear Levi's 550's jeans, which are relaxed fit so they fit great but I have noticed that the sizing is more forgiving than other cuts--that is I usually wear a smaller size than in other brands. So I recently tried on a pair of size 8's I bought over Thanksgiving and they fit just a little snuggly. Tonight I tried on a pair of size 10 dress pants--they fit in the waist, but were too tight in the thigh area. The size 12's were utterly baggy in the waist, but fit in the thighs. So I'm guessing that in a "curvy" or "relaxed" cut I'd be a size 10 or 11. I'm totally used to having to get stuff tailored *LOL* dress pants, even "short" lengths are always just a smidgen too long for me and I have a good tailor. But unless I could find pants super cheap it wouldn't be worth the tailoring as I am hoping to continue losing weight and not be able to wear them for too long!

My clothing saviour is Old Navy. I'm am super short - 4'11" and carry all of my weight in my waist. Old Navy always seems to have the perfect size be it shirts, pants, and especially shorts! I would be practically on fire here in Southern California in the summer if it wasn't for that store! I agree too with Sears. I always found their selection of work clothes to be comfy and fit great.

I have the same problem. I wear the Express Editor pant - they have it in a stretch fabric, too, that helps with curvy figures. I also like Banana Republic trousers, they have a couple of fits (these are my work-trouser basics). All in all, I find that having a good tailor is the best option. I have a tailor in town and have to have almost everything altered - I have a large bust and hips compared to my waist (bust and hips are 1-2 sizes larger than the rest of me), so often nothing fits the way it should. It makes SUCH a difference and I feel much better in my clothes.

I have a similar problem and I am SUCH a clothes horse. I love the Tommy Hilfiger pants. They fit on the hip and through the thigh really nicely. They are a mid-rise pant though. Another great one (and more dressy) are the Ralph Lauren pants. They have a higher rise which, from your pics, it looks like you prefer. Liz Claiborne jeans are also cut the same way. As for the cost, you're looking at $70 up BUT if you keep an eye on the clearance racks (I do!!!) then you can get them for up to 70% off. Another one I've recently found that I LOVE are the Apt. 9 jeans they sell at Kohl's. I believe they also have a dress line too. And those are $29.99

BTW, you look AWESOME!!! Keep up the great work.

I am a total pear shape (hour glass is better!)

I can't help you with dress pants although I find that the newer cuts that lay on the hips are better than the old 80's style of higher than your bellybutton! (yikes)

But for everyday jeans and casual pants I really like Lee comfort waist. It has elastic inside the waistband but you can't see it or notice it at all on the outside. I buy them at Kohls.

    Congratulations!!!

Jeannie, I wondered the same thing! I don't just "still" have my tie dye...this summer I bought a gorgeous tie-dye sun dress!!! My kids love it! My littlest one went trick or treating as a hippie! She was adorable!
  • Twilight1542,

I will gladly recommend to you the Fashion Bug pants. I have the same body type, although much larger. Fashion Bug has designed 3 different types of pants based upon body styles. The blue dot pants fit me perfectly. They may seem a little tight when you are trying them on because the waist is smaller then the hips, but keep going and pull them on. The fit is fantastic! I work in a professional office with business casual dress and they are definitely my favorite pants.

I have also tried for jeans Faded Glory, I think it is a Walmart brand. They fit nicely, although a little big in the waist.
  • I have a pear shape. So everything that gets over my butt, never fits my waist. I haven't bought new stuff in a while since I have a closet full waiting for me. I'm not sure if Macy's still carries J.Lo's clothing line, but her stuff was geared towards those of us with curves.

Also, I like Dots. I'm not sure if there is one by you, but they are cheap and I always seem to fit into the dress pants. I've even found trendy dress pants that had an elastic waist. Again, they are cheap, so the stuff doesn't always last long. But if you have more to lose, they are worth it cuz by the time they start fading or falling apart, it'll be time for a smaller size anyway.

Thanks for the tip! I checked out old navy and actually found some dress pants that fit decently and didn't break the bank! Thanks soo much!

My suggestions have already been mentioned but I'll reiterate for future readers. Old Navy + tailor. You can find pants for CHEAP at Old Navy most of the time on the clearance rack. $20 or less. Generally I've found most Old Navy pants to be more forgiving in the hip/thigh area though I normally do still have to buy 1 size up in dress pants and 2 sizes up in denim to accomodate my monster sized behind. My waist is currently 37" and my hips are 49" :noway: so I'm right there with you when it comes to being "hippy."
