Walk Gently?

My coworker has lately been poking fun of the fact that I make a lot of noise when I walk around the office. I’ll admit, it is a bit” stompy” (and it’s definitely louder when I’m busy or angry), but I’ve always had a loud walk.

Has anyone else encountered this or come up with a way to “walk softly”? I AM walking on the balls of my feet (I’m often in heels).

I don’t *think* it’s a jab at my size, because when I jokingly told him to “stop making fun of my weight”, he looked horrified and said several times that that wasn’t what he meant. But he brings it up again. So I’m wondering if, despite assurances to the contrary, if that is “what he meant”.

Because unless you guys have some sort of advice, I’m chalking this up to having to move more weight around than anyone else in the office (it’s a fairly trim office and I’m tall). At which point I intend to tell him to shove his complaint where the sun doesn’t shine.

Thoughts?

My family used to say I walked really loudly, stomping around the house. It was partly my weight (285) and partly that I walked like a lumber jack. I lost over 100 pounds and took ballroom dance lessons and I'm much lighter on my feet now. But I do have to think about it because it would still be my tendency to walk like a lumberjack If I'm not paying attention.

I worked with this guy in college who lived directly above me in our dorm, and he walked SO loudly it sounded like he was stomping around - and he was tall and skinny. It may not have been a jab at your size, some people do just have a loud walk!

I've always been big, but I'm light on my feet.
I do tend to walk on my toes sometimes though.

My boyfriend who is 60-70 less than me walks like he weighs like 1,000lbs.

    I guess it all depends.

Absolutely nothing to do with weight. My son is 5'11" and extremely slim and he has the heaviest footfall Ive ever heard, same with my husband. I have no idea what the mechanics are but presumably something to do with the way you plant your foot. Try not to walk on the balls of your feet though that can cause aching feet. I know it's impossible in heels but if you walk around the house in bare feet practice walking through your whole foot. i.e., place heel then slowly walk through to the toes lift off and start again. It's a great way to tone your feet and keep them healthy and may alter the mechanics of your footstep... btw if the fellow you work with was mortified when you mentioned weight, I'd believe him it probably didn't occur to him at all..

Hahaha love it. I'm an Aussie, and when I first lived in London and lived in a 2nd storey flat, my then fiancee told me I was a heavy walker. I was probably the lightest weight back I've ever been back then, so it has nothing to do with heaviness!

It's purely 'how' you walk. If someone has brought it up, and made you conscious of the fact, then think about how you're walking and adjust it if you feel it necessary. Personally, I don't care! lol

I'm bigger, always have been, and I walk very gently. I'm going to give credit to marching band, lol. We had to roll from our heels to our toes, so it was a 'gentle' stride, haha. Maybe try rolling your feet? ;)

I have a daughter who is no bigger than a popcorn fart but has a very intense, heavy walk. She gets it from her mom. It is probably connected to the intensity of your concentration..... not your size. A "take no prisoners" walk. Next time, tell the guy who complains that this is your "march into war" walk and he can choose to be on your side or on the other side!

I have been told I walk like "I have a purpose in life and nobody is going to get in my way" it has nothing to do with my size. I just walk hard and fast, I can make things on the shelf rattle and bounce if I'm not careful

     Popcorn fart?!?! That is too much! And I love your advice, too.

Personally, I am one of the "click-clacks". I wear heels at work every day and tap around on the hard floors here. I work in a day spa, so the extra noise is not appreciated much. Everyone says they can tell my walk all the way down the hall. :blushing:
