My story.. Period gone, just really need advice?

I'm 18, 5'8, a female and my name is Daryl! Pretty much around February I weighed about 154 pounds and I started using MFP to log 800 calories a day and I would do probably 1-1.5 hours of cardio a day 6 days a week. I became obsessed with only eating healthy foods. I lost a lot of weight and slowly fell into disordered behaviors. At my worst which was probably may I would allow myself 450 calories a day and was still exercising daily. After restricting for so long, once I allowed myself to eat a normal large meal I started binging some and fell into a binge/purge to restrict/overexercise cycle that I am putting up a very good fight against and coming out of! The last time I weighed myself I was 114 pounds. At 5'8 I know that's too little. I havent had my period in months, I've lost count. I just need some solid advice. What types of things should I be eating and how much, and with how much exercise? And how do I get my period back? I'm sick of living this way, I just want to be healthy. I'm very much in starvation mode bear in mind. And also, with a medium frame, what is honestly the lowest I should weigh and how can I achieve that? I know I need to gain weight and I'm okay with that to an extent, it's just that every time I attempt it I binge and that sucks I need advice big time! I appreciate it in advance

I agree you will do best with some medical support here cause you are on a slippery slope. If it helps I am 5'4"and 107lbs so still in the underweight category. I started mfp at 97lbs and needed to eat 2300 PLUS exercise cals over about 12 weeks to gain 10lb. I have seen girls in recovery eating closer to 2500-3000 with restricted exercise. (I never had an ED just a fast metabolism) right now just to maintain I'm between 20-2100 plus exercise, so as you know you really are way way below what's healthy! Honestly as you need to gain I'd say at least 2300. But I understand that's a huge leap so I would aim to go at minimum 1200 plus exercise. And up your healthy fats as they are your friend. But I highly highly advise professional support here, you need a Dr, a nutritionist and therapist. Even at 97 I still had a period so you are in a bad place.
Best of luck!0 -
Agreed. See a doctor. Find out why you are doing these things to yourself. Have a professional guide you out of your rut.0

Okay sweetie, this comes from a place of love so please don't take anything I say harshly. You need to go see a doctor ASAP. You are already showing how strong you are by admitting you can see there is a problem. Your body is telling you that it is in danger by stopping your periods. That is severe. You need to weigh up in the 130's to be at a healthy weight. I'm only 5'7" and weigh 130 and I'm on the lean side. I think exercise is a wonderful thing but for you, right now, you should not be exercising until you get clearance from your doctor. Your body doesn't have the fuel it needs to keep you going. You are a beautiful, well spoken lady so please know this is not your fault and you just need a little help to get things back under control. I wish you the best and hope you get some positive help and get on track to a healthy lifestyle. Take care.0

What you are doing is going to either cause you to become fat or dead, if you keep it up for any amount of time. I'm assuming you know that because you are here asking for advice. If you are in fear of becoming fat if you quit dieting, there are some strategies that you can try to increase your nutrients while keeping calories fairly low.
First, make sure you are eating enough protein. For the amount of exercise you engage in, try for 1 gram for every pound of body weight. So in your case, that would be 114 grams of protein a day. Fish, eggs, soy and whey protein supplements are a low calorie way to get this amount into your diet daily.
Next, you need to focus on nutrient dense veggies. Anything that has a nice dark color like greens (spinach, collards, kale, watercress, parsley etc) will have a lot of vitamin power for the calorie load. If you are going to binge, eat a big bowl of broccoli. That'll fill you up, but won't add much at all to your overall calories. One cup of broccoli is only 36 calories and is so full of good nutrients it's crazy!
Next, you are going to need some good energy foods to power through all those workouts. Fruit should be high on your list as it is an excellent source of energy without carrying much in the way of calories. Strawberries (or any berries really), cantaloupe, and apples and pears are excellent sources of energy and have a low glycemic load (This means your body uses the sugars for energy, so basically like being sugar free). Grapefruit is also a good fat burner when combined with caffeine (try eating a grapefruit and then having some green tea).
Try to add in some yogurt or other dairy several times a week and/or take a calcium supplement to protect your bones. Low calorie eating can really screw up a person's bone density. You don't want to break a hip on the treadmill do you? Since your period stopped this is really important. Your body is feeding off your bones, organs and muscles to survive right now and you need to begin rebuilding those cellular structures.
Finally, set aside one day a week where you allow yourself to eat whatever you want, guilt free. There is evidence that one binge day a week where you indulge your cravings is very, very healthy. This adds in all your micronutrients you've missed throughout the week and can make your skin, nails and hair look amazing. It is also good for your brain. The brain runs on saturated fats, and having a few on a binge day will make you smarter and protect you from mental illness.0 -
please go to the Dr.!!!! :flowerforyou:0

I'm in the same boat! My last period was in February. I think both of us are experiencing secondary amenorrhea, which is when your period stops due to stress, low body weight, and/or excessive exercise.
I have my annual check-up with my doctor tomorrow (or...today, since it's past midnight) so I'll ask her about it and share the results. But definitely check with your doctor, too.0 -
Well done for posting, acknowledging the problem, and asking for help. That should set you up nicely for the next step which is asking for help from someone qualified to give it to you. Good luck and please let us know how you get on0

Your period stopping is not a good sign, you need to nourish your body and take care of it. Make sure you are meeting nutrient requirements. I recommend that you read this article http://www.wannabebig.com/diet-and-nutrition/the-dirt-on-clean-eating/
Also, I am like you you obsessed with eating healthy and if I mess up, I binge, and it becomes a cycle of over-eating and restricting, but after I read the article I learned that you need to eat in moderation and that the ultimate goal is to meet your nutrient reqs. If you cannot by food, I recommend that you supplement (but do not rely on supplements solely). Good luck0 -
Ditto to everyone, you know something's wrong, go see a doctor.
I don't know how to recommend how much you should weigh... 118 is too low though, I'M 5'11 and have a really small frame, and my lowest was 110 which looking back was ridiculous. I'm now aiming for 130.
If you want help you can become thin AND healthy- just get a doctor's advice and don't leave it too late, trust me.
(And if you ever want someone to chat to, my inbox is open- I struggled with an ed for several years)0 -
i hate to be an echo .. but .. go see a doctor ...
if you want just go to a walk in clinic and talk to who ever is on call ... it would be best to see your family doctor but .. still talk any doctor ...0 -
As a recovered anorexic I advise you to see a doctor right away. *hugs* you've taken the first step by telling us you have a problem but without proper medical support this will only get worse not better xxx0

Hey. So its really great that you recognize this eating disorder. I agree with everyone else, you need to go to a doctor like asap. Its very important that you get on a meal plan with your doctor that gets you up to the correct weight for your height and size. You could be missing your period because of chemical and vitamin deficiencies. You need to get a specific plan that gives your body everything it has been lacking due to this eating disorder. Trust me, i know because ive been down the eating disorder road. :ohwell:
Good luck girl. Best wishes to you.0 -
your doc might be able to refer you to someone who specialises in this.
i'd suggest you start taking a really good multi-vitamin & mineral today though. and if you're having a bad food day there are high energy meal replacement shakes & soups for people (usually invalids & the elderly) who struggle to eat. eggs & dairy are good things to add to your diet.
your bone density will have been reduced by your lack of food soyou need plenty of calcium in your diet
...why am i saying this? becuse i've been there and i know there's no way i would have gone to the dr at that point. you SHOULD go though.0 -
Thank you so much everyone! I didnt expect so many thoughtful replies! I used to weigh 110 lbs at 5'7" and that's extremely small. I used to fear that if I gained any weight I would look huge, have a fat roll or otherwise pudgy tummy. I'm up to 130 lbs now and none of that came true. I'm just a healthier version of my previous self. I'm still thin. I still get comments about how tiny I am although 130 doesn't sound tiny. I lift weights, exercise and try to eat right. My profile is public so you should be able to see my pics if you want to see what 130 looks like on someone shorter than you. Keep in mind, even if you weighed 130 you would still be skinnier because your taller than me. Also, if you are going for a lean look (low body fat) lifting can help get you there. You may weight more than you look like you do but the goal here should be health, not a number on the scale . Good luck to you sweetie.0 -
Yea lady, you really need to see a doc. : (
A lot of my dietary choices and work out choices caused me to have an abnormal menstruation, which means I'm not even ovulating. 10 years later, my husband and I are still struggling to try and have a baby. This isn't something that needs to wait, it is extremely serious.
I started adding juices to my diet. Juices like the "mean green" from Fat ,Sick, & Nearly dead which assisted in regulating my periods again. I'm still failing to ovulate.
Go see a doctor.

I remember losing my period from drastic weight loss plus super hardcore exercising. I did 12 spin classes a week and ate MAYBE 500 calories. I was 5'9'' and around 125 lbs. Not nearly as light as you as I really doubt I could get that low anyways but still very light and overworked. My period disappeared and didn't come back for 6 months. It was convenient not using tampons but pretty scary to see it go away. I recommend seeing a doctor. Sometimes the period disappears because you are underweight and other times it just goes away from working out too much. I think mine was a mix of both? It isn't always a bad thing but you should just gain some weight back. Weight training would be great for you.0

Healthy and beautiful.0 -
It's called amenorrhea.
ETA: It will come back slowly (and usually not right away) as soon as your health improves.0 -
Please tell me you've already scheduled an appointment with a doctor for this...its the only real way to fix this. Good luck!!!0
