  • This challenge in June made me address my drinking issues. I got some good info and book recommendations, joined ClubSoda and have been AF for nearly 4 weeks. All the usual triggers such as work stress, travel, holidays and celebrating my birthday ( where I was the only one not drinking ) have been dealt with successfully.…
  • Lanzarote, where I live when not in the Desert :)
  • Had my neighbours ( in their 80’s) round last night for some drinks. Previously this has involved alot of wine, as they can drink dor their country ! Instead, I stuck to sparkling water and found myself in the funny situation of being literally bullied by an 81 yr old woman about why I wasnt having a “proper drink”.She…
  • I can recommend Kick The Drink ...Easily by Jason Vale, an easy to read, very insightful. Has helped changed the way I think about alcohol and got me to day 14 AF with no wobbles.
  • Day 12 AF, have survived the usual triggers of airports, travel, sunshine, BBQs. Have got my parents staying for a week and it is great being able to take them out, without having to watch my limit or be grumpy because I can’t drink as much if I am driving. Have been out buying wine and beer for them, with no urge at all…
  • Day 6 AF, another 10 hours of sleep, then up for 45 mins yoga, which I’m finding really restorative, a nice way to treat my body. After that, a 7km run, passing all the pubs with Sunday afternoon drinkers enjoying the sunshine. Not even tempted, no jealousy, happy to be out running. This time 2 yrs ago I was finishing…
  • Personally, I think AF beers all taste like *kitten* and are a taste I don’t want to acquire, plus they are full of carbs that I’d rather avoid. I found this book,”Making Soda at Home” by Jeremy Butler, which has some great recipes for syrups using fresh ingredients rather than a bunch of chemicals. You can control how…
  • I was in London's West end yesterday afternoon with my wife, a lovely hot sunny day. Friday, the pubs are spilling onto the streets with office workers. A cold pint of lager was so appealing. But I knew 1 pint would become 2, then a Chinese restaurant would've seemed a good idea. And two bottles of wine. Then I'd be in top…
  • Day 3 AF, I’ve been doing this commute 6 times a year for 6 years, today is the first time I’m not stressing, racing through to get beer, then more beer, then goto the toilet, then beer, then toilet , then queuing and swaying for the plane, wondering if I should goto the toilet again or if I cn hold it until I’m on the…
  • That's very poor behaviour from a colleague and worse from a manager. No one has the right to make you feel obliged and under pressure. *kitten* them ! As for the race, it's normal, even the pros *kitten* themselves before a race. Channel that nervous energy. Once the gun goes off, you'll forget all about it. Good luck !
  • AF today, day 2, been sat in the bar drinking sparkling water and lemon on my last night in the desert. Good to know that when I get on the bus tomorrow morning at 5 am for the airport, my head is going to feel great. So many people have missed that bus due to drinking the night before and it causes huge problems and…
  • You're not failing, you're having learning opportunities and gaining experience along the way.
  • Have a look at Club Soda website and FB pages, they do both AF and Mindful drinking .
  • I've done a lot of cycling in places like Libya and Saudi Arabia, with temps of 45-50 deg C. I always calculate 1 litre/water / hr, using salt tabs or electrolytes replacements mixed in. Drink small amounts, constantly, rather than periodic big gulps. Start small and build up tolerances. Plan routes so you know you can…
  • What time of day are you exercising at ? Exercise will release endorphins, which will give a high.
  • for a man, expect 2500 cal/day to maintain weight, to lose 1kg/week you'd need to have an input of 1400 cal/day, ie: a 1100 cal reduction per day or 7700 cal/week Your deficit is 350 cal/day or 2450 /week or about 320g. But, that's all just theoretical and numbers on paper. How many calories are you using during all these…
  • the calories you take in are not going to your glutes. If your glutes have grown, then it's due to the exercises you've been doing. Cutting calories won't necessarily reduce your glutes, cutting the glute exercises will. If there is a calorific deficit between what you eat and what you burn, the body will start to…
  • I downloaded the EasyQuitDrinking app yesterday, there are many similar apps out there. I like the health stats page, showing things such as how your blood alcohol level is improving, along with cell regeneration, liver health, mental health etc. Also how much money you've saved and how many hours/days of lifetime you've…
  • AF yesterday, up at 4am today for a run and a nice ice bucket shower as a reward. Spent most of my not-drinking-evening reading "The unexpected joy of being sober", which is a surprisingly enjoyable, informative and useful book. I work 4 weeks on/off and tomorrow I go home for 4 weeks, with all the temptations of bars,…
  • Don't beat yourself up, let it go. And today, don't "try", just do
  • Thanks for this recommendation, downloaded it onto my Kindle and enjoying it. The AVRT section is very interesting. Deciding that the desire to have a drink isn't due to a weak mind, but is the result of something else inside you that wants feeding, could be a very useful mental tool.
  • I had some vodka last night, diluted with alot of sparkling water. I drank so much fluid yesterday - ice tea, sparkling water, flat water that I was just sick of actually drinking anything at all by about 9pm. Up at 4am today, a nice run and a cheeky ice bucket shower as a reward. Awesome!
  • Luck has nothing to do with it. You've got this.

  • Add coconut milk or coconut oil to any protein shake, also chuck in honey , bananas. Try making bullet proof coffee with plenty of butter and coconut oil. https://healthline.com/nutrition/18-foods-to-gain-weight
  • thanks for the reminder of this, I used to make this alot last year, 2 tea bags in a 1.5 litre bottle of water and leave for a few hours. Have just put a couple of bottles in the fridge to brew
  • Bianchi breakfast stop, with training wheels.

  • Sounds awesome! Hope the race went well.
  • Went to G's retirement bash in the bar last night. The upside was they'd put some effort into the food, so I got some good steak and chicken, rather than some the usual muck we endure here. I drank my litre of sparkling water, then decided I would have some Chivas, but with alot more sparkling water. Declined all offers of…
  • There's always open water swimming! You could always try moving the position of the cleat on the shoe as a temporary fix, to a position that puts less pressure on the affected area, then move it back when you're healed.
