  • i call B.S. on this "starvation mode" crap, if one has hundreds of thousands of stored fat calories in reserve to take up the slack. C'mon people, we are thankfully not living in concentration camps! The Khumer Rouge is not stowed away in your fridge, ready to pounce if you forget to eat. Simple rule of thumb--if you work…
  • Yes, yes, yes. I am shocked at the amount of calories I put into my system eating fast food. One little cheesy bean and rice burrito from Taco Bell packs 480 calories! Now, that's practically the same calories as a meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner). And to think I'd throw down 2-3 of those without even thinking. Planning works.
  • I suspect your performance will be bound to drop for a bit (i.e., temporarily) after giving blood. (I have not given blood while running, BTW). See, for example, http://justyouraveragejoggler.com/should-a-runner-or-joggler-donate-blood/ As to other performance issues, stick with it. It's good you are monitoring your heart…
  • More intensive workouts--raise the heart rate! Work more on power and strength. Over a long period of time, the metabolism adjusts a bit, so your body becomes more efficient (does less work, burns less calories), so you have to ramp up the work rate in the gym.
  • I think anyone, male and female, looks horrifying when they get "bodybuilder" big. Like the advertisement of that guy that pops up, noting "want muscles"? Is that supposed to make you want to click on that site? The guy looks like a Martian who was dropped into some secret "Comic book vat" that transformed into a super…
  • I confess that, if I have a physical preference, I'm more inclined to be attracted to tall, bigger boned women. I have no problem with six-foot women who are either muscular or just bigger boned. Being taller myself, my experience is that I have had better sexual relations with women I can see "eye to eye" with. Any way,…
  • I'm 1.90 meters, and I have no qualms about getting down to 75-80 kg! That was what I weighed before, but I was a runner/cyclist. Everyone's physique is different.
  • If the local gym membership goes down to 10 bucks a month, as someone told me it might, I might go back. Just to use the elliptical machine. That would mean getting up at 5 in the morning or so, but hey, I'm really happy with the progress I've made with the diet. That sort of consistency will hopefully give me consistency…
  • For now, I have completely given up on alcohol and sweets. Not just alcohol, but the only liquid I take is water. For me, it's about building good habits for life, and I had a lot of bad ones, when it comes to eating. Perhaps, in time, I shall re-incorporate them in, but for now, I'm not close to my goal of 30 kg lost, so…
  • Thanks for the clarification. I did look at your recent diary entries, and you seem to eat a lot of lean protein, most likely double/triple what I eat, with vegetables, i.e., generally low in carbs from breads. That takes a lot of dedication and perseverance. Good for you! As for me, to answer the question, II set my goal…
  • Just looking at your stats--join date is May 2011, the difference between the starting weight and current weight is 100 lbs (!) Wow!!!! Congrats! How did you manage to lose THAT much weight in 4 and half months??? What were your workouts like? How much did you eat, and how much was your daily caloric deficit??
  • I used to be a distance runner, with marathon times of appox 3 hours 30 minutes. I can't run anymore due to injury, but here's my two cents for those starting: 1. Get a good pair of RUNNING shoes (not cross-trainers). Do not use your running shoes for general walking or training, but only for running. 2. Replace your…
  • Complete and UTTER B.S! There is NO good reason to do it. Period. It is barbaric and inhumane. The fact you are advocating it and falsely putting out B.S. about it is hugely troubling. There are long term effects to health of the cat-it's where many of its touch censors are that it needs, declawing can lead to arthritis…
  • Yes, I ride my trainer. I actually try to do sprints on it, 10-15-20-30 minutes, go all out. I agree that bike riding is the best. Before my injury, I was actually training for an Iron Man, having already done the century ride and the marathon individually, I figured, how much could it be to add a swim? :) As I found out,…
  • I've set my goal to be about 80 kg (I"m 1.9 meters). I'm wondering if an extra 5-10 kg is actually doable. If I lost that extra 8-10 kg, I'd weigh less than I was in high school (!) I'm thinking it will have to take an unbelievable amount of work in the gym to lose that extra 5-10 kg--has anemone calculated the diminishing…
  • I gotta figure out a way to work out harder, without impacting my knee. So far, I've generally met my net calorie limit here, more or less (I'm not fretting that I was 57 over yesterday, big whip). I'd like to get it so I'm eating 1500-2500 and working off 1000-1500.
  • Yes, true, but I find that most of my fat is around the waist, so as I lose weight, it will mostly leave that area. :)
  • I've taken to intense stationary bike workouts through out the day. 10-15 minutes at a time. Hard enough that I'm tired and sweating, even after 10-15 minutes. That burn about 20-22 calories a minute. Not as time consuming as 40-60 minute straight workouts, but more intense. and burn more calories per minute. That way, I…
  • THis is the BIG thing Ive leaned here, that I never did before. Drink drink drink. and Only water. At first, there were some problems. I actually had to pull over on the freeway because I thought I couldn't make it to rest stop. At home I have a tall glass, that I fill up--twice--first thing in the morning. My goal is to…
  • Hmm, I'm attracted to all kinds of women, but if I have to state my personal preference (I"m 1.90 meters, i.e., 6'3") are women I can see "eye to eye" with. :) However, there is a proviso to that preference---come to think of it, I've always been grossed out by the "model" look-- the "I'm 5'11" and weigh exactly 98 lbs".…
  • Thanks. I'll read it when I get back in couple of hours. My initial thinking is: the basic idea is not new--high intensity, low rest, is essentially what boxers have done (measuring everything in training in ROUNDS of 2-3 minutes, 30-45 seconds rest in between), doing a variety of exercises that build quick and strong…
  • It's quite simple. Hungry? Eat. Not hungry? Don't eat. This whole baloney about 1200 calories is getting to me, here. Speaking just for myself , I can eat just fine (NOW, but it was hardly the case before I started this program), and also work out just fine. I can probably work out harder than most people here, I'm…
  • Either (1) three types of Trader Joe's tofu concoctions (fake chorizo, fake sausage, tofu or seitan) fired with spices and/or onions and tomatoes, with some whole milk Greek yogurt (500-600 calories) Or Trader Joe's Irish oats with almond milk and fruit. (400-500 calories) Yeah, what can I say, I'm a vegetarian, and Trader…
  • a 500 net diet is not necessarily a starvation diet, if you work out a lot and have hundreds of thousands of net fat calories stored up that can make up the gap. Isn't it when you have less than 5% body fat that your body goes into starvation mode? Obviously, over time a 500 net diet may mean your body's metabolism slows…
  • Checking in. I presume this must mean age, not weight lost, right? :)
  • Height: 1.90 meters Starting Weight: 108.9 kg Current Weight: 104.3 kg Goal Weight: 80 kg (about 22.5 BMI) Dream Goal Weight (when I ran/trained for marathons): 75 kg
  • Ah, thanks. That's probably it. Probably means I'm losing too much weight. Not a bad thing, though.
  • Can't you just do a Report? Easy enough to just add up the totals (ball-park) from the graphs? I just look at the weekly totals as a thumbnail, after the fact. I take it one day at a time. Each day is an accomplishment. For me, looking at a weekly total may cause me to loose sight of the particular day.
  • This was my BIG problem, too. I can venture into the gym, hit the elliptical for 2 hours straight on the highest resistance setting (20/20), apparently burn 2000 calories during that time, all the while only getting my heart rate up to like 135-140 at the end of that period. . And wind up losing no weight! Because I was…
  • I've always thought the cardinal rule is: if you're hungry, eat. If not, don't. The problem arises when people eat when they're not hungry. Drinking a lot of water helps me feel full, too.
