One of my Mom's friends, who I had never met before, told my wife and I we should have more than one because "The oldest could get sick and die". Yeah, thanks.

1978 Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath. Good show. Bob Dylan and Tom Petty together. Genesis before they became a crappy 80's MTV band Moody Blues Crosby Stills and Nash Rolling Stones with George Thorogood. Dead Kennedys Bonnie Raitt showed up and sat in with my friends bar band in Lawrence KS on a New Year's Eve show.…

Brains I've had buche, pierna, lengua, tripas, and cabeza tacos. All delicious. Not sesos though. There's gotta be a line somewhere.

Jellyfish eel natto octopus ceviche gator bear elk grilled beef heart that one of my Peruvian friends made. Anicucho. I'm sure I spelled it wrong, but it tasted great. Fried chicken gizzards are a favorite. Ate at another friend's restaurant and he served a CO2 infused raw oyster with avocado puree. Pretty good, but he…

Maybe my Jayhawks can win a conference game this season.

I've been ordering from Rancho Gordo. Great beans, and the fresher the better. They seem to cook up faster than the dried beans I get in the store. http://www.ranchogordo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RG&Category_Code=DHAHB4

I think it needs a carton or two of sour cream on top after it comes out of the oven. Maybe some chives, and definitely bacon.

Carnitas or Chile Verde.

This one is pretty involved. I made it for a gathering of chefs, bakers, cookbook authors, and food nuts from all over the world. I was a bit nervous about it, but it came out great and the food critic for one of the Chicago newspapers said it was one of the best ever. I don’t measure anything, but the great thing about…

July 4 barbecue, done in the rain. Lots and lots of rain.

I roast my own. Can't get any fresher. Ethiopian Harrar is my favorite. I usually get something from Central America as well, they're not quite so intense. French press, no cream, no sugar to get in the way of great coffee. http://www.sweetmarias.com/index.php

On my way to the basketball court, it's Allman Brother's Whipping Post from the Live at the Fillmore album. Nothing while I'm playing. Except sometimes, when these Lexington, KY guys blast country. Tough to play ball while listening to country music.

I got one last week from our farmers market. Along with some onions and zucchini. I had the Wever fired up for some grilled chicken and thought some grilled veggies would go well with it. Cut the eggplant, onion, and zucchini in half lengthwise and brush with olive oil. Place flat side down directly over charcoal ( I had…

We called it "stay white". Probably harmless but I forgot exactly what it is. At the time, every restaurant used it.

I ate at a Subway today for the first time in years. What is that smell in there? Terrible sandwich. I hate that place, it will be several years before I make that mistake again. The lady who made my sandwich was very nice.

20 years in the restaurant business. Started as dishwasher, ended up a kitchen manager/sous chef. As creepy as he was, Jeff Smith put out some very good cookbooks that explained the basics very well. You may find some at garage sales and used book stores.

It was a James Beard dinner at The American in Kansas City. Ten courses, each with a wine paring. $250, and it was a steal. Ten different chefs from all parts of the country. It was several years ago but I still remember most of it. We arrived to hors d'oeuvres of Hog Island oysters, in a meyer lemon mignonette, some crab…

You like it more than I do.

I don't know what units the diary uses, but I usually hit 12 to 17 per day. I hate sweet stuff though.

We used to sing the theme from Gilligan's Island on the bus on the way home, just in time to watch it.

1969 AMC Ambasador. V8 343. No air, but it had an 8-track.

I love a good Mexican chorizo. The cheap ones are made with lymph nodes, I made the mistake of buying the cheap stuff once. Yuck.
