  • Yes, I grew up on it. Cheap, filling, nutritious, doesn't need refrigeration, versatile. Yum. I have some almost daily. I like the extra crunchy kind. ETA: As to *why* we love it so much, it probably has a lot to do with our country's agricultural history, the Civil War, reconstruction South, and this guy:…
  • I do 5:2 with a bit more calorie cycling so I can have some really social eating days on the weekend. I am 5'3, 147, lightly active, maintenance somewhere around 1800 net cal. I'm not super strict, but this helps keep me under maintenance--I've lost .5-3 lbs. per week doing this. On my fast days I have lots of coffee,…
  • Once I changed my macro goals to 50% fat, it stopped being an issue. ;)
  • Sip water all day. I also like to sip tea and chicken broth. The sodium in the broth helps replace electrolytes lost with all the urination during fasting. If I need a snack, string cheese or 15 almonds--something with fat & protein.
  • Wow, that made my head hurt also. On the one hand, yeah, that sucks. On the other, I agree with hubby: "So eat something different." I keep a few easy meals on hand for times like this (Lean Cuisine, baked eggs, or something like that).
  • Yes, I do use BMI charts. Because it's based on research (even if somewhat flawed). As soon as I get into the healthy range, I immediately start to feel better in my body and look more like myself. And the range is pretty large (almost 40 lbs.). I have not been at the bottom of the range since high school, but I'm aiming…
  • Look into calorie cycling or intermittent fasting. I eat very low during the week so that I can have larger meals on weekends / social events.
  • Yes, I've been doing 5:2 for about a month. Love it so far, it's working, and it fits my lifestyle. Down 9 lbs. in a month. Once I learned a few tricks, fasting days became easy and I feel great.
  • I've been doing IF for about a month now (5:2). 9 pounds down and it fits my lifestyle. I had a few rough days at first, but I learned a few tricks and feel great now. How are you feeling?
  • I have been. I lost close to 50 lbs. on MFP in 2011-12, keeping my cals. the same each day, (12-1500). I regained 25 by not logging for 3 years, so I'm back. Back then, I worked at home a lot and lived alone, so I had a lot of control over when and where and what I could eat. Now, my days are all crazy different, I'm…
  • This. Your body *and* your mind need help.
  • Try adding in a couple hundred calories of fruits and veggies (lettuce doesn't count). A banana or an apple are 100 cal. / each, and add some other stuff to your salads... peppers, cucumbers, sprouts, avocado (and, yes, even dressing).
  • Wow, thanks for making me laugh. You asked for advice & got it. Only you know the specifics of your situation. To answer your original question, I've found I had better success when I set my activity level to reflect my daily work walking (even if it was only 5 days out of the week). When I set my activity level lower and…
  • My appetite doesn't vary too much depending upon exercise. I do eat more on days that I exercise, but only to fuel myself, not necessarily b/c I'm hungrier. My intake varies more depending upon whether or not I'm eating out with friends, what time of the month it is, whether hubby has the day off, etc.
  • I use my quick mix station, but there's a lot of reggae, ska, and punk on it... music with faster bpms to keep me moving.
  • The yolk is the best part, but I do try not to eat more than a couple a week.
  • I stay away from diet drinks and just use no-cal mixers (seltzer, club soda). A gin & seltzer or a vodka & soda are only about 65 cal. / each. Not fruity, though, sorry... can't think of a single fruity low-cal bev.
  • I used to work in restaurants, so I know the temptations. I would actually have the best success by allotting myself X number of tastes / bites throughout the day and then counting them as my snacks. If you use an average of 50 cal. / bite, then budgeting in 6 tastes gives you 300 calories of snacks throughout your shift.…
  • I spent a few minutes in the sauna yesterday, and was wondering the same thing. Here's an answer I found on answers.com: "yes, you can burn calories in the sauna, but you will be better off taking a short healthy walk. Most of any perceived weight loss in a sauna is due to sweating. The loss of bodily fluids will make you…

  • I find it easiest to buy things I don't have to cook / prepare. It cuts down on the ingredients from week to week. So, yogurt, berries, bananas, granola, cereals, cheese, etc. are all staples in my diet. I can just grab and go, and some of that stuff lasts a long time. I usually make big batches of things like beans or…
  • I'm no help, because I just use good ol' maple syrup. Nothing compares. I will put some in a little dish and dip my waffle or whatever into it. I usually end up using a lot less that way.
  • I'm also working on losing my last 10 pounds or so. My method is really just slow and steady. I'm preparing my body to maintain this weight for the rest of my life, so I need to start getting it used to that. My deficit is usually only like 200-400 cals. or so now. I'm stepping up the strength / weights to really help…
  • LOL. Yeah. Special people. ;) Actually, the 4H club around here makes huge batches and sells it for fundraising. Lots of school projects revolve around apple butter, too... but of course, I'm in the middle of apple orchard country. It's really simple... just throw in a bunch of apple chunks, some cinnamon, nutmeg,…
  • It's super easy to make in a crock pot... and it makes the house smell fabulous!
  • It's also great on a peanut butter & banana sandwich, on a waffle, on pancakes, on muffins... on a cracker with bleu cheese... mmm... love me some apple butter. I don't really think of it as a replacement for butter, though.
  • I have a few places where I know I can order my size online and it will fit. J. Crew, LL Bean, Lands' End... I can buy my size in those and be 99% sure it will fit. It's worth going into their B&M stores, trying stuff on to see what size you wear in their stuff, and then having the ease of shopping from your couch... with…
  • I love fresh tomatoes, but HATE ketchup... especially if it's out of a little packet. I love bananas IN things (muffins, smoothies, sliced in cereal), but can't eat one plain... GAG!
  • An average 2-year-old. Holy smokes.
  • Oh, yeah, my weight is all over the place during the day... fluctuating as much as a few pounds. That's why I go by the number that I get first thing in the morning after using the bathroom, but before eating / drinking / showering. It's when I've got the least amount of "stuff" in me and should represent my weight more…
  • I like Luna protein bars. They've got lots of other nutrition, and are less than 200 cals. Good chocolately flavors, too.
