Hi there. I'm 5'9" and 63 years old. I've lost 12 pounds, with 35 to go. The lockdown has forced me to admit, again, how much of my eating is NOT driven by hunger, but rather by habit, stress, social schedules, boredom, etc. I decided to use that to my advantage and eat exactly what I want these days. What's working so far…

I've been running for about 20 years and I have never, will never run faster than an 11-minute mile for any length of time. It just doesn't matter to me. The more important number is the number of miles. Push yourself a little on the pace, sure, but make sure you build up time and distance. Get a running buddy; join a…

I have oatmeal almost every morning. i think it works out to seven cents a serving. My big splurge is fresh fruit on top sometimes.

Fun question. I've lived like that for long periods of my life. Not so bad. Breakfast is easy -- and delicious. Put some regular oatmeal in a baggie, with some quantities of dried fruit, flax, etc. Just add hot water in a big mug when you get to work (a 2:1 water/oatmeal ratio is good). Let sit. No need to cook.…

All that...AND a fabulous new haircut. Congratulations.

I'm late adding to the thread, but I have to say... In addition to the amazing transformation, I had to notice how the change shows off how pretty you are. And on top of it, you got the perfect haircut. Wow.

Really, folks, it's a reasonable question. Look up Colin Campbell, the China Study, and other resources. I'm not a doctor, nutritionist, or anything like that. But I have read a great deal about this diet (usually while munching some chips ;-), and it's interesting.

He might be on what is colloquially known as the Bill Clinton diet. Extreme vegan diet, and, if we're talking about the same thing, yes, it is very unforgiving. But it seems to be helpful for people flirting with serious health issues. A friend of mine (no really, I do have this friend...) had a terrible time with statins,…

And, and...when you make the leap from 150 to 149, the 50-pound weight on the gym's balance scale moves back a notch. Big victory!

Fabulous pictures... including the rock-n-roll haircut!

vegan margarine... What is vegan margarine? Is it labeled as such in the health food store?

Sometimes I think oatmeal is the top ten. Everything else is a distant second.

This reminds me of the time some French friends came over for a cookie-baking party. I supplied the basic ingredients and equipment; guests supplied any exotic ingredients for a recipe of their choosing. Well...their recipe was in French (of course), used metric calculations, and of course, specified weight, not volume,…

Ruffles sour cream and onion potato chips. Ah, memories.

The woman in the black cut out dress is definitely the hottest. Wow!

"No, thank you." Repeat as necessary.
-
It is. Since February, I've been losing about 1 1/2 pounds per MONTH and I couldn't be happier. The weight is gone forever, so what's not to love?
-
Absolutely. She's just acknowledging your hard work and its results.

Glorious!

As a child, I loved the cream of wheat my mother served for breakfast every morning. However, some days, I just wasn't in the mood and left the bowl mostly uneaten. My mother had no problem with this; however, she did let me know that what I didn't eat for breakfast would be served to me again, this time cold from the…

I think your experience is borne out...junk food calories ARE cheap to buy. Soda is cheaper than real juice or milk, and so on. I think in the original article, Mark Bittman makes the point that right now, junk food can be cheaper because food policy has us *subsidizing* it. Imagine if we subsidized fresh fruit and…

Yes, the things you mentioned are all factors. Which one is *more* or *most* important depends on where, when, how the study is done, what kinds of peole are involved -- all kinds of variables come into play. I agree, though, that you've mentioned some important points. And they are relevent to what we're talking about now…

Good point. I wouldn't go so far as to say taxes did "little" to affect people already smoking, but I agree with the general sense of your post. High tobacco taxes are particularly instrumental in deterring people from taking up the habit, yes.
-
It seems your personal experience isn't typical. Overall, when tobacco taxes go up, consumption goes down. A lot of factors affect that dynamic, but yes, tobacco taxes do seem to curtail smoking.

I don't live in Philadelphia -- any more -- but I once did and miss it and get back whenever I can. Your city rocks. Elton's got it right. Good luck!

I'm not a big meat eater, and in fact have been vegetarian for long periods of my life. However, I find it's a lot of work for me to get enough of the right kind of protein on a vegetarian diet. I just don't want to do that extra work right now -- on top of logging food, working out, etc. It's easier for me to get protein…

Well, yes, you look phantastic (ref: the t-shirt). I have observed from others that it indeed takes a long time for our mental image and even the sense of ourselves in space to change, longer than it does for our physical selves to slim down. So patience might help here...enjoy the ride. And congratulations.

Thanks; I'll check it out!

If anyone would know of an exercise to bulk up arms or shoulders or chest, this is the thread to find that person! Since I'm always going to be shaped like a Christmas tree, alas, maybe someone can tell me how to make the tree a little wider-looking at the top? I'm always a little sad when I hear that women can't bulk up,…

Cabbage soup. It's a cold weather dish, and I'm looking forward to making it in a few months.
