  • rice, peanut butter, and homemade oatmeal cookies. However, I can have the first two in the house; I just have to enter what my serving will be BEFORE I get any. The cookies... well, it's good to be human.
  • I find I recover faster and have better runs if I swim on rest days. I'm sure it's different for everyone, so do some exploring and find the most appealing thing that works for you.
  • Thanks again! I need to be able to swim a full lap before I can join the triathlon training at the fitness center. However, they do have a masters swim program. The timing is pretty awful, but not impossible. Good to know it might be worth the effort to get there.
  • Thanks for all of your responses. It seems like a resounding- get some lessons. Thanks all!
  • I'll give completely contrary advice. Using less soap might also help. Some people have skin that breaks out from getting dried out by soap. I would still shower, but maybe give your face a good rubbing and then use a little moisturizer.
  • I did get a pair, and I wish I could wear them everywhere. They are not as kind to my feet as my Salomon running shoes, but they're okay. And the amount of traction is pretty amazing. Just thought I'd add this in if anyone else is looking. I have worn them for about a dozen runs at this point on ice, in slush, on asphalt,…
  • I have a moving comfort bra, my second, I got from Bounce. I love these bras.
  • We did this back in the spring and early summer and we now run right around 15 miles a week most weeks. We run exclusively outdoors. We had no trouble with injuries. We did start some resistance training after we finished the program to help build leg strength and further reduce the risk of injury. Good luck!
  • Totally. Even if it's just walking, I do it. Being outside in and of itself makes everything better. And if I feel like running after a few minutes, Great! I don't lift, and the resistance training I do doesn't seem hindered by any symptoms.
  • We use You Are Your Own Gym. We like it. We've used it for 25 weeks now.
  • Mostly on your back? Upper or lower? Do you live somewhere where you can comfortable run in more clothes?
  • Can I just add this bit of inanity? I love the image of a reporter wandering around the street asking to measure people's "waste". That is cracking me up!
  • Also, you really will get faster walking. I live in Vermont and my winter pace is slower than the other seasons because of the slick surfaces, and still, the more I walk the faster I am able to walk. Keep at it. The walks won't necessarily take as long as they sound like they will.
  • Also, corn tortillas tend to be half the calories of flour.
  • Thin Mints- those girl scout cookies. As many as were in the house. Never had more than two boxes in the house at a time, so I don't know how many I COULD have eaten. It's easier to have the self-control by not buying them than the self control to not eat them once they're in the house. As a kid, I ate condiment…
  • I run outside and started when there were still feet of snow on the ground. I was also just over 200 pounds. First, I found clothes that didn't embarrass me and kept me warm enough. I used a town path that was groomed so I could run on compacted snow. I didn't get trail shoes until later when the snow was melting, and that…
  • My Dh and I got overweight together, and we've lost weight together. Most things we do involve being "on the same team". Not that we ever said, "Hey Honey, let's get fat!", but we did make other life choices that made being fit more difficult for awhile. Now, we are very happy to be where we are fitness-wise. The thing…
  • You'll "see" it when your skin starts to sag where it used to be stretched around fat. Guess how I know this. ;)
  • Just one other note- I had a "plateau" (not 6 weeks) after we started back to school. I was going crazy trying to figure out what had changed. Then, I realized my activity level had plummeted. I switched to "sedentary" calories, and began to lose weight again. As for motivation- I just kept reminding myself that the…
  • Will is like muscle that you can develop, but it can also get overworked. So, you could work on developing it at the grocery store by not buying the sweets mostly. When you get to where you just don't buy that stuff, then you can try to develop it in another way. Having stuff like that around the house is mostly too…
  • I am no expert and can only give my anecdotal evidence, but I have been losing weight and doing resistance training for a few months. Maybe I'm not gaining muscle, but with the weight loss and the "toning"???, it sure LOOKS like I'm gaining muscle. Even if the resistance training is only helping me keep muscle, I'm…
  • Also- if you are eating at a fairly extreme deficit, you may not be constipated. You may just have less to eliminate. Maybe TMI, but worth considering.
  • Are you developing the muscle in your legs? I have huge thighs, but they look MUCH better since I started doing resistance training and running and walking almost daily. I'll never look good in pencil jeans, but I really like how I look in just normal jeans now.
  • I've been thinking about this, too, because I'm still pretty far from my goal weight, and some of my family has begun chastising me about getting "too skinny". No one EVER said anything when I weighed over 200 pounds, and I assure you, I am much healthier now than then. I don't get it. I actually wish they had been more…
  • Building muscle supposedly helps burn fat better than cardio. Also, building muscle will firm up whatever is "underneath" and everything will look better. You don't have to do anything expensive, and I'll just put a plug in here for You Are Your Own Gym as an inexpensive way to get started on resistance training.
  • I really advocate for some resistance training or something, because my girls were looking totally deflated until about six weeks into resistance training. They will never be "young" again, but they don't make me sad anymore. And that's important to remember- weight loss and fitness don't actually undo age, they just make…
  • We have been doing the "You Are Your Own Gym" thing for about 13 weeks, and my husband and I are both amazed. We did not "have" to buy any equipment, because there are work around for every exercise that involve stuff in your house. The app was like $5 and its pretty amazing, but more useful if you read the approx. $20…
  • Also, skirts are more forgiving than pants. You can kind of deal with them from a little tight to pretty loose, as long as you don't carry too much stuff in the pockets. :)
  • Bounce sells a moving comfort bra called Booby Trap. It really does the trick. I just bought my second one. I also got a glamise bra, but it isn't quite as robust. Besides all that, the Bounce bra descriptions are a hoot to read.
