  • Mom2annie, thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. After I asked my question I realized I've tried the 16:8 Intermittent fast before with an 8-hour Eating window and that didn't work for me, at all. I like OMAD for the simplicity and like you suggested, hoping I'll adjust to the big calorie load at one meal.
  • Hello! I'm Dee, weigh 187 at 5'6". I've been overweight my entire life reaching a high of 260 pounds in 2012. Between then and 2014 I lost 105 pounds using calorie restriction then the Medifast diet. Since the beginning of 2015, I've regained about 35 pounds. It's been a struggle to lose that regained weight and if I'm not…
  • I'm a big fan of fasting for so many reasons and I do it regularly. However, what you're describing seems like a binge-restrict cycle you're setting up for and obviously that has negatives. Tomorrow I would just eat your normal foods when you get hungry. I also suggest looking into fasting in the future but not as a sort…
  • I agree with the others on your progress, it's great! I've found I really need to limit carbs the older I get, especially the simple kind like sweets, cakes, etc.
  • Never tried it but know 2 guys who did and each lost a lot of weight 50-100 pounds and managed to keep it off 3 years later. They liked the plan. You won't get many fans of the plan here on MFP. You could try various protein powders, Quest, Isopure taste good to me. I prefer to eat my protein and suggest looking on YouTube…
  • I lost 35 pounds counting calories then doing WW. That took nearly 2 years. Then, I went on Medifast and lost 70 pounds in 6 months, for a total loss of 105 pounds. Over the past 3 years, I've gained 30 back. I think my weight gain came from not knowing how to feel as a thin person, previously having worn a size 24W and…
  • I haven't tried exogenous ketones but love following a ketogenic diet. I've read of people trying to jump start ketosis with the supplements but they're expensive and for me, one day of fasting or 3 days of a 20gm/day of carbs diet gets me into ketosis easily. I'm sure your body's natural ketones have got to be better than…
  • Google Intensive Dietary Management. This is a site/blog run by Jason Fung, MD, a Nephrologist in Toronto who has hundreds of patients, on regular fasting regimens. I don't think there's another person out there with his qualifications and experience with this topic. Also, highly recommend the book written by Jason Fung,…
  • If you're in ketosis, loss of appetite is totally normal. Matter of fact, a lot of keto'ers gravitate toward periods of fasting both for the weight loss and other health benefits. Those folks find fasting a breeze thanks to lack of appetite. Make sure your endocrinologist knows you're in ketosis and can suggest appropriate…
  • I lost a lot of weight eating a ketogenic diet, and recently went LCHF to finally reach goal. I really like this way of eating, have tons of energy and am losing weight steadily. Check out Jimmy Moore's "Keto Talk" podcast. He also has another keto podcast...something like "Living La Vida Low Carb". Both have been helpful…
  • If I just started eating on my new plan, I give it a week or two before I eat out. After I've been on plan 1-2 weeks, I accept the invitation and find appropriate dishes on the menu, even look online at the menu before going. For booze: flavored vodka + club Glass of white wine + glass of sparkling water ...dilute wine for…
  • Yesterday I tried to respond to someone on the first page who questioned whether I *really* believed insulin was an independent factor in weight gain but failed (lost my c&p, then forgot...old person's issues). I believe it's an independent risk factor but that differs from saying it's the exclusive risk factor. Calories…
  • As a recent fan of ketogenic diets and fasting, I'm really interested in this topic. I would geek out over this study but the link requires $32 to access the article which I'm not paying. I'm a bit biased in that I wholeheartedly believe insulin is a growth factor and excess levels lead to weight gain. I don't think it's…
  • When did Quest change their recipe? Anyone know?
  • Keto-Keep carbs under 20gm/day and use your carbs for veggies. Some veggies cause bloat, like the cruciferous varieties so I'd stay away from those for the week. Fish, fish, fish. I don't know why but during weeks when I eat fish 2-3 days, I have a great loss (you can eat shrimp!). Eat your daily calorie allotment…
  • She's either rude or forgot or didn't know you were still on LCHF. Regardless, I wouldn't give it another thought. She probably just read some article on that struck a note with her and wanted to proselytize the message. I doubt she remembered you live the LC life. Plus, you're getting results you want so just blow this…
  • I make mine in an instant pot (electric pressure cooker) and it takes about 2 hours. Next time you get a rotisserie chicken, put the picked carcass in a ziplock in the freezer, if you can't make stock right away. I add an onion, bay leaves, peppercorns, and a glug of apple cider vinegar. It tastes so much better than store…
  • I also had trouble staying on plan after my initial success (70 pounds in 6 months in 2013). I was about 5 pounds short of goal and just blew it. Since then I regained about 40 pounds, have lost 20 of that and have 20 more to go. My longest MF streak was about 1 month but I can usually only last 2-3 days. The frequent…
  • I was definitely a diet drag for a while. I LOVED my diet and talked about it like it was my newborn or I was selling the stuff. It was also a very restrictive diet so I drastically changed my social behaviors. Looking back, man was I annoying! However, I did what I needed to do to reverse decades of unhealthy living. I…
  • 1 &2. I started fasting after I was in ketosis so I had zero symptoms when I delayed my first meal until 2pm. I've read headaches and hunger are common if you're not in ketosis and are new to fasting. 3. I drink water and coffee, 2 cups, each with 1tsp. Heavy cream. Sometimes I have bone broth with salt. I keep my intake…
  • There's a really good book by Jason Fung, MD, that serves as a comprehensive intro to fasting. He's someone who not only has extensive medical training, he runs a busy diabetes clinic and incorporates fasting into his treatment plans. In his book, he states you can drink coffee and broth during the fasting portion and even…
  • Never giving up. Never stop weighing yourself. Keep in touch with your healthy, fitness-minded friends. When I started slipping into old bad habits I blocked my "fitness" friends on FB and stopped hanging out with my yoga girls. Don't do that, refuse to let yourself go to that isolated, dark space. I wish it was a one time…
  • There are no rules with how often one does IF (intermittent fasting). You do what's comfortable for you. The only thing I've seen recommended is to gradually ramp up to the longer duration (7-day+ ) fasts. If you plan on going that long, talk to your doctor. If you're a diabetic or take medications, talk to your doctor…
  • I do the same thing. Some nights I stop eating by 7pm but regardless, I wait until 2-3pm to eat. Some nights I eat until 9pm. I eat 300-500 calories at 3, don't feel hungry again until 6-7, when I can eat 700-1000 calories and I'm full enough I don't want to eat more. This schedule, combined with being in ketosis, have…
  • 1 tsp. Heavy cream or a little more half and half is about 20 cal. and really lightens my coffee. I don't use sweetener (anymore, former DD "extra sugar extra light" coffee drinker here) but use a little Splenda or whatever. I gave up sugar in my coffee years ago, cold turkey, somehow didn't miss it.
  • 16:8, last meal done by 7pm, eat around 11 am next day. During the fast I have water and two cups of coffee each with 1 tsp. cream. Cold turkey, not that hard, IMO.
  • I think there's some value in taking breaks to maintain weight, before cutting calories to lose. I attended a conference 2 years ago where the speaker (an MD who works with bariatric surgery and weight loss patients) recommended a 10% drop in weight then maintenance for 6-12 months, then another 10% drop and repeat as…
  • Sugar free jello, the boxed kind you make yourself. I can't stand the artificial sweetener/preservative taste in the pre-made cups. I add a little homemade whipped cream (I have that steel walled cannister and Nitro cartridges...add heavy cream, shake and walla). 2 oz. turkey lunch Meat Hard boiled egg Couple Tablespoons…
  • I gained 30 pounds back, of the 105 I lost. I felt awful and beat myself up for months. I finally packed away my size S/M, 6's and 8's, put them out of sight and filled my drawers with clothes that fit (size 10/large). It took a little while and some self-loathing but I finally believed all you have is right now. You have…
  • I didn't have any issues losing weight after mirena placement. When I eat at my usual deficit for weight loss I lose my usual amount.
