  • Oh good question. I don't have all the anwers, but I too had shin splints. I am also training for my second half on St. Pat's day. I guess the main thing is to start slow, don't over do it. Sounds like a nice break for resting the shins. I would also pick a training plan, there are many out on the internet. If the half…
  • I had problems with shin splits too, which then led tendinitis. It was the cause of the wrong shoes, and running too much too fast. It took a lot of time for them to heal. I went to physical therapy and was introduced to compression socks. In PT it was all about strengthening / stretching the muscles around the area and…
  • this topic should have its own website. no one ever agrees I am in the MFP arleady calculates your calories without exercise boat. So when I burn calories with a great workout, I eat em. Plus somedays it's hard to eat all the foods you need in a day, without the exersize
  • This is TRUE! I love running, started with c25k, now going to do my second 1/2 marathon, and signed up for a full. Running is something you can do all yourself, and feel proud and accomplished. Good luck with your journey
  • Welcome Maahhk! I love Boston and the Red Sox! Good Luck with your journey
  • The best, as suggested is to go to a store that specializies in fitting running shoes. Everyone has a different gait and a different foot. If you don't have a lot of time Runner's World magazine would be a good place to start, they are always reviewing shoes
  • Couldn't agree more, love the Chobani. They have a nice selection of flavors as well. I like to mix in granola

  • I quit drinking pop becuase I wouldn't switch to diet, but I love my coffee! I have read studies that suggest a cup of coffee before a workout or run is good becuase of the boost., however it can dehydrate you as well. I think the best is just determine what works for you. Everyone is different.
  • This is how I started my running journey years back. I will run my 2nd half marathon on St. Pat's day, and my first marathon this fall. There are many people on MFP who use this. I think it is a great tool for teaching you that it is a process, especially if you have never run before. I also think it keeps you motivated to…
  • I'm with you! Mostly though it's because you pick up a sweetener and it has ingredients, sugar just has sugar. When making a recipe that calls for sugar, are you really eating it all in one sitting? If anything, this site should teach about moderation and being accountable for what you consume, so you would eat maybe one…
  • I am with you, however if you only clean once a week and it's not part of your daily activity, it could be a "small" calorie burn. Unless you are cardio cleaning with plyometrics and 10 pound cans of lysol, I am not sure however you would get a 500 calorie burn. It is a good question....
  • I have a Polar, unsure of the model. It is great for counting calories burned. I also just purchased a Garmin HRM becuase of the GPS. Thembest HRM will have a chest strap. The ones without the chest strap are not accurate
  • I love running, and I would also like to make some new MFP friends.
  • there is the on going debate on whether to eat your exercise calories back, YES! eat more! MFP designs this into your calories. If you are on a 1200 cal diet, burn 200...then that is 1000 cals for the day...so eat them to maintain the 1200. Also may want to consider adding a weight routine to your workout. Also all that…
  • I actually lost my engagment ring/wedding bands while i was gardening becuase they are too big. I luckily found the ring, and until i get it resized I wear it on my middle finger. I almost had the most expensive flower planter on my block.
  • I've never understood those who don't eat the exercise cals back. There are 2394829048 posts on here about this subject. MFP sets my goal at 1200 cals, then i burn 500...so if i didn't eat them back I would only get a net of 700 cals in a day, not the wise, healthy choice. So instead it allows me to eat 1700 cals, leaving…
  • I love this 1 C Skim chocolate milk 1 spoon of peanut butter 1 scoop protein powder ice you could add banana too it's like a chocolate shake you could also use almond milk to cut the calories
  • I knew I would catch some flack..but in the 6 years that i have went to this gym, that is all I have ever seen these people do, nothing more nothing less. I guess it is their money.
  • I work out in a small all women's gym... I hate when someone changes the tv you are watching, pounding out a 3 miler on the treadmill is painfull enough! I hate loud cell phone talkers, i don't need to know what you are cooking for supper I hate people who go to the gym walk on the treadmill for 20 mins and leave, this is…
  • Hey Good Luck! I loved this program, it really eases you into running! Just remember to not over do it. Also as far as a good podcast, itunes has some couch to 5k programs that work with your music on an itouch and tells you when to walk and when to run. Also I prefer to run outdoors, becuase you don't have to stare at the…

  • Iowa Hawkeyes all the way! GO HAWKS!!! Proud alumni, never left town actually. We have had our share of problems this year too, but I will proudly support the Hawks. I sat through the last few years of basketball too.
  • I think you will be able to do the 5k, that is only one more mile that you currently are run/walking. Your current pace is great; better than my first 5k. Also there is something about finishing a 5k that is very satisfying, even if you are last, you finished. However with your current times you will do fine! Also there is…
  • crap i don't know how to quote people.... my response is in the quote on my abocve post
  • If you google "calorie calculator" or "calories burned while walking" you might be able to find something that would calculate your calorie burn on your pace, weight, age, etc. Without a HRM that would be your best bet. GOOD LUCK with the walk
  • be careful to keep your toes from rubbing up on the top of the foot holder thing.
  • I am with the above poster, I think Insanity is more difficult than p90x. With X it is more about doing each exercise to the best of your ability. With insanity it is do as many of the exercises you can within the given time limit. they are both great programs, good luck with which you choose to do. I think the hardest…
  • a HRM is the way to go, some of those workouts could burn up to 1000 calories, they are INSANE!! ok I did the program, and it was hard some days, but it really helped with toning for me, I really need to eat better.
  • If you do the lean version of P90x you never do the plyo dvd. However there is the small section of plyo in the cardio dvd. You could follow the lean routine and either modify the movements that cause the knee pain or as you suggested I think switching to the elliptical or another cardio excersize would be a good start.
  • This is slightly embarassing, but you lose so much weight in your butt that when you do ab exercises the contact between your tail bone and the floor cause a nasty rug burn, even when using a mat!
