  • Celebrated my 74 Birthday (Jan 1st. Raining), today, by going for my longest bike ride in years . Woke up to a balmy 46F this AM (Sunny Florida?) rode 75 Km (45+Mi.) figured a Km a year and one to grow on LOL . Burned about 2500 Cal. should take care of some Birthday Cake(((; So you young folks , don't get discouraged,…
  • BTW, it's worth noting that she is not by any stretch of the imagination overweight. I, on the other hand, have been overweight all of my life. If anyone is going to understand supposed "psychological damage caused by weighing myself", it would be. And yet even I can see that a scale no more causes psychological damage…
  • +1 Good advise. Low cost. You can do these anytime of the day ,w/o driving to the gym. Good Luck.
  • I saw this quote on a backpacking site. I wrote in down in my log book so I see it every day . " Do not regret growing older It is a PRIVILEGE denied to so many. " Unknown. At any age all that is left for us to do is decide how to use the time left to us.
  • If you're lucky . The alternative is unthinkable ((;
  • NO. Had all the meniscus removed from left knee after a work related accident. Doctor and rehab trainer both said it would be alright to run when needed on the job but hard training for weekend races was out. Nothing between the bones , bone on bone impact would result in worse injury . I had ask the doctor (1st. doctor)…
  • I think it's more beneficial for your body and health overall along with calorie loss to start with long slow distance. (Not too long at first) . Take it slow in building your distance . Don't worry about distance AND time. If you want to run 30 min. great it doesn't matter how far you go . If you want to run three miles,…
  • I sweat like a horse. And like my HS track coach used to say "Show me a horse that don't sweat and I'll show you a sick horse". We've been backpacking more lately and my wife is complaining that she is sweating more. I think she is just getting healthier and in shape AND it's been really HOT. Yes stress can cause sweating…
  • Not everyone passed you. The person in your mirror a month ago is still there ,the way you were , unchanged. However you have changed. You are not that person. You are doing something. THAT person is the only one you are competing with. The old you. Just outdo that person. I've always told people the hardest part of daily…
  • I had athroscopic knee surgery done on one knee years ago. Ended my running as a hobby . Took up biking. Seems to really work. Burn a lot of calories and makes your legs stronger with no pounding on the knees. If you're not ready to venture onto the streets on a bike , an indoor bike setup will work just as well. Good Luck.

  • You do get accustomed to the seat. Just ride as far as you can ,let yourself heal up and ride a little further the next time. Another big thing is adjust your seat height and position in relation to the handle bars and pedals to suit YOU. What suits the Tour De France guys may not suit you. Get advise from a reputable bike…
  • My biggest issue is the "I deserve it" idea. example : "I've been working out and starving for months I've lost weight I'm tired I deserve that Double Bacon Cheeseburger and fries." When I hear myself saying things like this I know from experience that I'm breaking and I better get hold of my mind . Now I do have planned…
  • Tough indeed. I remember patients in a local hospital emphysema ward sneaking out into the stairwells to smoke (cigarettes probably bought from employees) . One died there. There was a big uproar but Hey he was an adult making his own decisions. Another thing making it difficult are companies like Big Tobacco and others…
  • Personally I think I would rather that I or the government that represents me err on the side of too much compassion as opposed to too little. I do agree that smokers are bringing these problems onto themselves and probably don't deserve the support of the tribe. Brings to mind Government (all of us) Tobacco Subsidies. But…
  • I don't think one can be addicted to coffee as it is essential for life ,like air, water and food . There is no choice.... .. Is there ? Just to make sure before my morning ride I add a cup of strong expresso to my 3cup coffee thermos so I can survive. I usually add a tsp. of splenda per cup coffee of whichever strength.
  • Good on you for seeing after your grandchildren. My sister and I were raised by our Grandparents. I don't think I ever thanked them for it. So I'll commend and Thank You . Good Job! . Stay with it. Eat healthy. If you only have time and energy for a little exercise then do that. Any exercise you can do is better than…
  • I eat a little of the semi-sweet dark chocolate here and there. I like it on the bitter side. Doctor advised if we had a need to cheat , a little chocolate was a good choice. I got to making my own chili from scratch a while back and found you can mix hot chili peppers with chocolate. I really enjoy that.
  • I got my wife a set of Black Diamond poles last winter. They are made for ladies , adjustable ,lightweight and not too $$. They really make her more stable on the trail. She wouldn't be without them. For myself I just cut a Red Oak sapling the right size and let it dry out. But then , I'm from the olden days and all. (((;
  • +1!! to Both of You. "Those who say " have just bought into the myth that life is really over at 40 or so. NO one can tell me that you can't improve your health and lifestyle at any age. In 2011 at age 69 I was pushing 215 lbs. on a 5'10" frame. Dreaded just getting up and going out to feed the dogs. Just worn out all the…
  • I would advise get an "off road" capable bike. That way you can ride it on the pavement or trail. Riding off road gives you a lot of training with less speed or distance , and less motor vehs. I think biking helps your overall health. Good non impact calorie burner. You'll see more improvement in your legs and cardio. You…

  • Truly a great job. Please tell us more about how you did this. Cold turkey or a "bad" day here and there? How much did you cut your daily calories count ? A lot of people ,incl. Me , really want to know. Again , good work. Congratulations. D
  • Here in Fla. people on bicycles have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers. (Some states not so.) If the lane so narrow or obstructed that it is unsafe to be passed , bikes can "take the lane". You can still pass them in a car ,but if you hit them , kiss your ---- goodbye. I give signals , stop at…
  • Perfect Body ? What's a perfect body ? I've had men that looked fatter than me outrun me in Saturday morning races. I have ladies who are heavier than me pass me on bicycles almost every day. Sure I pass some but it's never the looks that make the difference. All perfect... with all their imperfections. Both the scales and…
  • Society has these "parts" scripted and waiting for us to act out . "You've worked all your life ,you deserve to take it easy, just sit down Sweetie ,turn on the TV , over eat , become old and drop out." They need these parts filled and played out , it makes them feel safe , secure . No thank you , I'll pass . I hear the…
  • Great Post , Thanks. Tell your Mom , for me , that the only person she is competing with is the person she saw in the mirror when she got up this AM. just say "Can I be better than THAT person"
  • I was doing a 35 mi. bike ride the other day and got caught in a downpour. I realized it didn't bother me in the least and even felt cooler , so I just kept cheerfully riding. Today after finishing a ride I got out the chainsaw and cut trees and brush til Noon. It occurred to me how fortunate I am to be this healthy at 72.…
  • Thanks for the quote NiconPal. I'm working on trying to live up to Oliver's words.
  • Don't worry about thoughtless stupid remarks people make. You're trying to improve what you see as a problem. You're way ahead of them. Truth is they're much more worried about their own problems to spend much time thinking about your "problems". Just stay with your plan ,You only have to make YOU happy.
