Climbing Stairs.
I just walked up 20 flights of stairs. it took me about 8 min, but taking out the brief rest breaks, I'd say a total of 5 min of walking....the entry on MFP is as follows.....seems like a lotta calories relatively...and so given a choice of power walking, jogging or stair climbing, why would you ever do anything but stair…

TDEE - adding walking as exercise to caloric totals
so MFP asks you how sedentary your are in your daily life (I think for many with desk jobs...this is the lowest setting) and gives you a caloric goal. And then you have to add exercise....right? I know this has likely been asked and answered a million times on these boards, but do people add general walking (not talking…

ankle hurt - options ?
so I can't run for a while....I am trying to lose weight - I'm going strict w/ the diet, and I'm researching full body strength training sessions... is that my best bet? anyone have experiences losing weight w/o cardio?

Fruit = sugar ... arghh!!
was in a trader joe's yesterday, and couldn't resist a few of the deals on fruit...got some cherries, some apricots, and some blueberries... at the counter I off had just noted, "wow, I got a lot of fruit"....the clerk, in response, said "a lot of sugar". This took me by surprise, but I just replied "oh, we're not going to…

healthy daily supplements?
anyone eat a coarse of daily supplements? curious what other people think. I know any statements here are going to be controversial, so hopefully no flame wars. obviously you don't need supplements if you eat the right diet that contains these anyway, and that includes even a daily multivitamin. that being said, doctors…

short term pleasure, long term destruction
eating food (bad food) makes you feel so good in the long term. do it over and over and you jump the track and start heading down the wrong path....and then its so hard to get back on the right track all over again. I'm trying to get back on but so so hard.

article re: increasing deficit calc as you lose weight
Interesting points in this article (for ex: "THE FIX: [When starting at 203lbs, rather than the old school 500 calories a week deficit,] the simulator reveals that to lose 20 pounds in 20 weeks without additional exercise actually requires a daily deficit of 656 calories, which means a daily budget of 2,392 calories. When…

does it matter how active if still eating back cals?
so 3 examples: (person 1) eat only 1400, no exercise (person 2) eat 1400 calories, do 600 cals of exercise, eat an additional 600 calories (person 3) eat 1400 cals, do 2000 cals of exercise, eat an additional 2000 calories to compensate. Would any of these 3 people be in a better position to lose weight? so you are…

diet is 90%?
so I've heard this - and it make sense - you need to eat very clean as a key to weight loss. stepping back a sec.... while some could do it through diet alone, and actually, since it really breaks down cals-in vs cals-out, you could do it through exercise alone, each method has its drawbacks. Ultimately I realize its a…

weight loss challenge (bet w/ co-worker) - any suggestions??
hey guys - I don't know how it ultimately happened, but looks like I'm now in a head-to-head bet against one of my colleagues who also wants to lose a comparable amount of weight (30-50 pounds). And its for cash money!! yikes. in fact, quite a bit more than I really want to lose (this guy thinks we're in Vegas or…

Friday Night Cheat Meal .... living with the baggage....
um...lol....it spiraled out of control a little.....I think I need to change my suppsoed "re-feed" meal around a bit in the future so that it stays within my TDEE (but allows me to have a slice of pizza once a week). Also, I think, even though I felt I needed it, I will continue to abstain from alcohol in the future as now…

nytimes blog re: sweet spot for exercise (4 times a week).
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/13/why-four-workouts-a-week-may-be-better-than-six/ the distill I got was this: (1) exercising more burns more calories. (2) in addition to exercise time in the gym, general activity (like walking around, taking the stairs, vs driving/taking escalator) also is an important part of…

sugar from fruit
very much an over discussed topic. I've done a lot of reading on it. the strong opinions vary from "you can eat as much fruit as you want" to "never eat fruit...too much sugar". on top of this, MFP sets sugar levels at like 30 or so...which you can blow by if you eat 1 apple or banana. so far I had been letting myself have…

3 days lifting/ 3 days running....tiring!
so I have been shooting for total body circuit training (big compound lifts) on M/W/F, and then jogging on alternate days....but now its Wed (ie - only 2 days in so far) and my legs are totally sore from Monday's squats, and Tuesdays run.....I know I will push myself tonight, but sometimes I just feel like they are "too"…

Eating at night/ after 8pm
I hear alot of people talk about this - that its key to not eat too late. I was wondering if there's any real basis for this? yes the food sits in your stomach while you are sleeping but, other than perhaps interfering w/ your sound sleep, doesn't it just get added up in your daily totals, or is there some magic to it?…

restarting strength. weights or body weight or both?
coming back to strength training. had thought at first I'd start conditioning myself w/ bodyweight exercises (like w/ the 100 pushups program), but have just started 3x a week full body circuits. But I'm feeling like I'd like to improve my pushups - always been a goal I felt lacking in. But, how can you do both? should I…

walking calories burned?!
so I just entered what I think was a brisk but not crazy walk for my commute - it came out as follows: "194 calories doing 30 minutes of "Walking, 3.5 mph, brisk pace" is that for real? seems high no? should I not bother entering in my walks (I walk back and forth to work, and at lunch, each for about 30 min)....so I guess…

squats.
how does a squat-newbie (relatively) do them at a commericaly gym with free weights if you don't know anyone there? Meaning, can you squat safely alone? should you do dumbell only? Not even sure where to get started - and don't really want to get a trainer. Been using the machine - and I know....bad bad bad right?

cnn article - cardio helps lose weight faster
its a somewhat nuanced article, as they report results that do not fully support their conclusion, but I thought it may be interesting to some. I'm going to continue cardio and strength together. http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/17/cardio-burns-more-fat-than-weight-lifting/

help figuring caloric intake. (calories vs. bmr).
guys - need some help. I'm certainly not a noob at this but its hard for me to figure out. I've been a follower of the Harris Benedict formula for quite some time. And I'm a believer truly of the eat clean/less, exercise more philosophy. That formula (which I admit I got from the Menshealth forums years back when I played…

is walking enough?
so, my gut tells me I need to throw in running and strength training. but ultimately, if my diet is within limits and clean, and I just walk for an hour or two a day, is that enough? (btw, I'm asking is more of a thought experiment - I am not a novice at this but was just curious if I walk, say, 10 miles in a day, does it…

half way to my goal - losing steam
so I was chugging along since March, lost 50 pounds, then somewhere in Aug lost some steams (probably lots of reasons) and while I haven't gained much if any weight I have been hovering static since then (now its mid Oct). I've stopped and started the regemin a number of times (exercise and diet), and have started again…

pushups or weight training
complete noob. totally weak. should I start off w/ some pushups (just got this program call "100 pushups" on the iphone), or just dive into weights at the gym? I started weight training but didn't feel I was making progress (only did it a few weeks, mostly full body compound moves) and I strained some muscles - so I have a…

fast days
hey guys - I've had a Friday night cheat meal for a while, but this last friday I followed it by a Sat fast (not on purpose in the beginning, and I ended up eating a 500 cal meal at 10pm so...) ..not a full fast....but the next day the scale dropped a bump, and today it has dropped more. I read others say good things about…
