how does a squat-newbie (relatively) do them at a commericaly gym with free weights if you don't know anyone there? Meaning, can you squat safely alone? should you do dumbell only? Not even sure where to get started - and don't really want to get a trainer. Been using the machine - and I know....bad bad bad right?

It should be safe in a squat rack or power rack0

I did some yesterday for the first time in ages and i did them on my own. I used a smith machine for mine in the gym and made sure i set the stops high enough just incase there was any problems. I also didnt go heavy i just made sure my form was good and il follow that for the next few weeks.
Im sure someone else can give alot better answer than me though whos more experianced lol0 -
I would suggest you start with body weight squats to get comfortable with the form, and depth.. then progress to goblet squats. from there you could either progress to front squats or back squats if you are comfortable.. if not sure about your form, bring in a camera and video tape yourself.
NOTE: if you have any worries about your form, you have issues with your back and spinal loading, or the facility does not have a squat rack, you can do single leg movements, such as the bulgarian squats and get a great workout with dumbells.0
