I know it's technically not called a muffin top but what are some of the exercise you do to tone and tighten that area? I have been looking for more area specific exercises to do.

You can't spot reduce. The only thing you can do to get rid of the fat on your midsection is to keep losing weight and/or reducing your body fat percentage.

Core exercises will strengthen your muscles *under* the fat, which will make your midsection look good when you lose the fat. But, they won't burn the fat away themselves.

Moderate calorie deficit, exercise (strength training and some cardio, if you want), patience and time.

    Simple!
Step one: Go to a store.
Step two: Buy a larger pair of pants.
Step three: Eat at a reasonable deficit. Cardio and lift heavy.

I call it the shaking your head exercise...

You shake your head left and right whenever offered food. do this for months on end and that muffin top will be gone!

    ... spot toning?

I'm hoping that she means simply to strengthen the ab muscle with isolation ab exercises...

I call it the reverse curl. You take a piece of food and curl it away from your mouth. Repeat until muffin top is gone.

The only spot reduction is lipo. You can always make a small incision in your abdomen and attach a industrial powered vacuum cleaner to the port of entry

    Calorie Deficit...

That being said, if you want to work your abdominals (which will help tighten the muscles beneath the remaining fat above the belt-line) you can:
    1. Sit ups
    2. Crunches
    3. Crunch machine
    4. leg lifts
    5. Planks
    6. Inverted sit ups

Sex. Lots and lots of sex.

Unfortunately, in many cases, there's an inverse relationship between the size of your love handles and the amount of sex you get... but since the OP is female, it should be much easier to acquire said sex :-P

The one where you exercise control over your caloric intake. You can't spot reduce and the 'muffin top' is a fat deposit. If you do exercises that build up muscle in that area, it's just going to be under the fat that is still there, thus not taking care of the problem you want to eliminate.

    Fat is stored energy.

    Food is potential energy.

You need to consume less energy (food) so that your body uses your stored energy (fat) and then your muffin top will go away.
