CELERY ALLERGY - recently diagnosed

Have had and have known that I have allergies my entire life, but went for blood tests and the skin tests about 3 months ago and found out that I am allergic to celery. Our family recipes included celery and i enjoy eating stalks of raw celery.
Of the many foods to which I am allergic, the celery came out at the very top, also am also allergic to all shellfish, nuts, coconut and have lactose intolerance.

My question is, would you continue to eat celery or just never eat it again? I have continued to enjoy it, but now.....am kind of rethinking this decision.

I wouldn't eat any foods I was allergic to. I am allergic to kiwi so I don't eat it. It makes my throat scratchy and my lips puffy.

I suppose it depends on your reaction - knowing you have an allergy now doesn't change the way it affects you and apparently it wasn't affecting you too badly or you would have noticed.

Some allergies can get worse as time progresses, my own walnut allergy is an example. Used to be able to eat them, then they'd give me fuzzy-mouth, now they make me wheezy. I stay away from them now.

I'm curious what your reaction was, if you didn't notice until tested? Or did you have general reactions and not know what was causing it?

Bottom line, I guess - if you'll feel better without it, give it up. If there's a risk your allergy will cause you issues or poses a risk, give it up. Maybe you can stop with the raw but tolerate it cooked in. It's all down to how you feel?

i would be careful as allergies can worsen over time, especially the more it's aggravated. and it could be lethal if your body goes into anaphylactic shock if worse scenario ensues

Celery is the ONLY one of those " allergic" foods i eat and lobster/lump crabmeat occasionally --- i never consume nuts of any kind .....or beans. It is just that i didn't even know i had a celery allergy at all, until 3 months ago.....really omg, who is allergic to celery???b]

My daughter tested allergic to beef, and her allergist said that if we'd never noticed any reaction to it, she should go ahead and keep eating it, but only 1-2x a week, not every day. Since she's not a big meat eater to begin with, we have pretty much done that for ten years. However, I'm not a doctor, etc.

My daughter had carrot juice and started to swell up. Luckily we were close to a pharmacy and got an antihistamine. Be very careful. Celery isn't so strange.

I have to agree with some of the other posters, it's not worth it to even try it. Did they give you an epipen to carry around?

I'm on immunotherapy right now, and I have to constantly carry one. Yes, your allergies can get worse over time. I've been doing treatment for about a year now and random reactions to my serums can still happen.

Another thing you might want to look into is if there are any other vegetables or fruits in the celery family. Ragweed and most grasses are my worst allergens, and unfortunately canteloupe and some other melons are part of the ragweed family so I have to avoid it. It was making my throat, lips and mouth itch.

It's really up to you. Clearly it wasn't negatively effecting you too badly, or you would have figured it out before now. I'd be cautious, though, eating something you know you're allergic to just sounds backwards. And it can get worse with more exposure. For example:

When I first found out I had a dairy allergy I kept eating dairy because only 1 out of every 10 times or so I'd be sick, so it was worth the trade off. The more I consume it, though, the worse the reactions are. Now it's up to 9 out of every 10 and worse. I take a pill if I can't avoid the dairy, but I've been weaning it out of my life now. Sadly because I love it. I think you might run into the same issues down the road.

This. You will probably develop an increasingly stronger reaction to the things you're allergic to over time. The odds that you might eat some celery without realizing it at some point in the future are pretty high. You don't want your reaction to it to be severe when it happens. A family friend died at a potluck because there were nuts in something that didn't look like it had nuts. Her throat closed up very quickly and there was nothing anyone could do.

I am super confused. How did you not figure out that you were allergic to these things before. Is this like allergy giving hives, throat swelling etc ?

EPIPEN-yes, have had one with me for years. There was a # attached to each food to be avoided, and the number for celery was 188 on the scale...the numbers for Shellfish were 10 below that and the Numbers for nuts were in the 166 range with 200 being the "most to be avoided". Coconut & Nuts close my throat, i know it and i never eat them. Immediate anaphylatic shock with hives, swelling, throat closing. No reaction whatsoever from lobster or lump crabmeat--other fish/shellfish i don't like anyhow. .....no noticeable reaction to celery. of course, am asking because i really enjoy celery, it is such a great snack.

My daughter is deathly allergic to both bananas and peanuts. I had no idea a person could be allergic to bananas, they are so mild. But you can.

@RodaRose --- celery cabbage is not regular celery, your chart shows regular celery as in same family as:Parsley: Angelica, Anise, Carrots, Celery, Celeriac, Caraway, Celery Seed, Coriander, Cumin, Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Parsnips, Sweet Cicily, Watercress. However, no ........never any reactions to any kind of celery. Thanks for link.
