Measurements

Today was the first time I took my measurements. I was shocked when I learned the circumference of my waist, hips, and neck.

I used a cloth measuring tape. My measurements were:

Hips: 38 (measured at the widest part)
Waist: 34 (measured at navel)
Neck: 13.5 (measured at middle, where the Adam's apple would be)

I'm 5'2" and 145 lbs, give or take. I mean, I know it really isn't as bad as it seems on paper, but when I look at the measurements, I think "You're kidding! My waist and hips are over 1/2 my height!"

It is going to great watching those numbers go down.

Totally! I just wish I'd have thought of taking my measurements when I weighed 175. It would be a real eye opener and make me feel more accomplished than I do now, looking at these numbers.

Your waist is the smallest part of your torso, which should be a few inches above your belly button (this is relevant in that when people/studies say "waist" this is what is meant). So when they assess your heart risk based on waist vs height, you're using the wrong measurement.

I do recommend keeping this measurement though, as all measurements are relevant. I actually have similar measurements, but I'm 5'1" and 133 lbs (although I haven't taken my measurements in awhile, last time my belly button measurement was 32" while my waist was 28").

Oh. I didn't realize that was the wrong place - thank you for telling me. I'll have to remeasure again. But, yeah, I will keep the measurement - it'll still be a nice reference once I measure myself again. (:

It's not really wrong, it depends on what you're using it for, like wicked said for waist to hip ratio you want your natural waist but for easier tracking you can use the naval just as a reference point. Make sure you are consistent with whatever reference line or point you pick.
