Hello all,
Just got a HRM with chest strap and decided to test it. It also counts burned calories. So I filled in my weight etc:
104 kg / 231 lbs
197 cm / 6.46 ft
20 years old
So I started exercising. It was like 10 mins walking at normal speed. Playing a little basketball and soccer with my brother and taking penaltys and some jogging over the field, not too heavy but it definitely got my heartrate up. Total exercise time was 45 minutes with my HR average HR of 145.
After that my HRM told I had burned around 800 calories. I'm not so sure about it. To me it looks like a lot in 45 minutes.
What do you guys think about this? Can I use the information my HRM gives me to log in MFP?
Thanks

really curious to hear what everyone thinks. If i get my hr up to 145 i burn about 10 cals per minute.0

I have heard the heart rate monitors in general over-estimate calories burned (this may be why I never lost any weight when I used machines at a fitness center years ago - ate back all the calories the machines said I'd burned). It's good to know from a fitness standpoint that you've brought your heart rate up to a high enough level. I'd take the minutes at a burning rate and then go to one of the TDEE calculators to determine what calorie level you should be eating at. Your weight doesn't sound all that high for someone close to 6 and a half feet tall - maybe you just need to focus on fitness and lean body mass rather than weight loss (unless you're just trying to figure out what you need for maintenance)0

I don't know - it seems high to me, but I am only familiar with what my numbers would be...for example, I could run for 45 minutes (5-5.5mph) and burn about 550-600 calories...
BUT, I am a 5'2" 125 pound girl...
Hee is what I decided a while ago - all my numbers are estimates so I just need to pick a path and stick with it...if adjustment is necessary, then I adjust. I also have an HRM and according to the maufacturer (but wildly unpopular on the MFP forums) i use it to track for all activity and even wore it for three 24 hour periods to get an estimate of my TDEE (which is about 2400). This number is a lot higher than all the online calculators (highest one = 2000 calories)...but I had to decide what to trust since I was stuck in a plateau and had to do something about it (up calories or drop them...)
So, I decided to give my HRM numbers a test. I set my calories at 2000 a day (up from 1750), a 400 calorie deficit per my HRM (but maintenance according to the online calculators). I am three weeks into the test and have dropped another 2 pounds so I have hope the HRM numbers are actually the correct ones. I have found this journey takes a lot of patience, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of patience. lol0 -
I decided to use MFP but, knowing they way overestimate, I only eat back at most 70% of the calories burned and only if I really feel I need to.0

You're a very tall dude who weighs over 200 lbs. I don't think that calorie burn is totally out of line. I have someone on my FL not quite as tall as you and few lbs less, and he routinely burns 1000+ cals in an hour.0

That's true. Does MFP also count calories based on your weight and length?
Just came back from frisbee playing. 40 mins total. HRM says 400 calories and MFP says 200!
I tend to stick with MFP since I don't want to think that I burned more calories than I actually did.0
