Hi! I also have a family of five. Feel free to add me as a friend!
  • Hello & Welcome to MFP! :)

Anything can be addicting & I imagine if one tends to have obsessive tendencies I can foresee logging everything on MFP pose an issue. If that is a concern then perhaps it would be better to seek professional guidance.

Personally I have not found logging everything 'addicting.' Rather, I've found it quite liberating & therapeutic as it helps me to continue to make healthier eating choices. :D

I do weight and portion all my foods. It's not as difficult as it sounds - some foods it's just a matter of reading the food label. ie. Crackers - 6 crackers = 1 serving. No measuring or weighting, just counting to 6. lol

Like with anything new, at first it maybe weird or seem like a time consuming step. But as you get accustomed to the new lifestyle, it's no different than washing lettuce leaves before adding it to a salad ... it's just a part of the food prep. ... at least it has become that for me. :) I don't think you necessarily need different meals for yourself & your family, you just need to measure your portion out. You can cook one big pot of beef stew and portion your own bowl which I don't think should be that much of a hassle.

MFP does track calories exclusively and it will give a breakdown of default amounts of recommended daily fats, protein, & carbs. I believe you can go into the advance settings to further customized to limit other things but I have never gone that in depth so I'm unable to give more details. :|

The breakdown of the fat, protein, & carbs helps guide the quality of calories that we choose.

SO if someone has 1500 calories a day, they can't eat Pizza, Doritos, Bagel & Cream Cheese and wonder why they are not loosing weight. Even though the Pizza, Doritos, Bagel & Cream Cheese may have come under 1500 calories the fat & carb content is well beyond the recommended.

Hope that helps & best of luck to you!
