strength training and food

So I went to my first strength training session today. I aim to go, each time, between 7am & 9am for 1 hour.

I started to get nauseous with around 20 mins to go. I was drinking water throughout but only had chocolate milk before I left the house.

Should I be eating breakfast before hand or drinking loads of water? Could it be due to the timing of my evening meal the night before and not having energy etc

I hope you didn't lift for an hour today. You are not going to be able to move tomorrow. :p

Anyway, the sugar in the chocolate milk should have been enough to stave off any nausea due to low blood sugar. Things should improve as you get in better shape. Water isn't a big factor, but try to consume some carbs around 1-2 hours before working out. The bigger the meal, the longer the wait for it to digest.

I generally need to consume about 250 calories before a morning workout if I want to make it through an hour or more. Generally a protein smoothie gives me the energy I need. I usually burn about 300-400 calories doing strength training/circuit training/swimming or a combination of all three. I used to eat half of a cliff bar for the carbs but it wasn't enough.

I'm not one who works out well fasted. I eat 50+g of starchy carbs before a workout (usually old fashioned oats with spotty banana) with a protein shake about 120-90 minutes before I work out. I find my lifts are stronger and my timed events are significantly faster than if I don't follow this protocol.

I wasn't doing lifts just body weight stuff. Things like lunge squats, incline push ups, trx pull ups, step ups, a few dumbbell exercises etc. From someone who does no exercise, I really pushed myself.

You can actually consume a 20oz Gatorade as early as 30-min's prior to training and be fine. I consume 40oz about 30-40 minutes before I lift.
