I would say I started gaining weight around my junior year of high school. It wasn't something I really even noticed but I did have my mom to remind me that my eating habits were not the best, and she was completely right. I had an unhealthy relationship with food, it was like I couldn't get enough and when I was done eating I would sit there and think about what I could eat next. I have always been a happy person so I don't know where the need to eat came from but I do know the results definitely took a toll on my happiness. I took a note of this change in emotions when I started college and there were all sorts of new people and I just felt self conscious and wanted to hide in my dorm room. The picture of me by the black car was the day I left for college. But obviously going to college there are tons of tempting unhealthy choices to capitalize on. I would buy those mammoth blueberry muffins from Walmart and just plow through them and they were damn delicious and I loved every second of their taste in my mouth. It wasn't that I wasn't an active person but there was no way I could out exercise the way I was eating, it just doesn't work that way.
I think when I really decided to change was when I met the guy who would be my boyfriend for the first three years of college. He was great but when I went home to meet his family he had twin sisters who were just as great as he was and they were beautiful. I mean just stunning and healthy and happy and I got along so great with them but I would just feel so sad and self conscious about myself that any situation would just tug at the way I felt about myself.
I decided to change and I think the most important thing to remember about this kind of change, or maybe any change in general is that it will take time. But if you show some dedication you can make major progress. I am telling you I slowly transformed myself into a health nut, counting every calorie and logging every bit of movement. My favorite part was when I started to realize that it was working and I wasn't going to be unhappy forever, this made me unstoppable.
Today I am not as natzi style about counting calories and tracking exercise but I just try to keep moving. My top three favorites from this change are: the confidence that I have in any situation, the cute cute cute clothes, and the overall feeling of healthy happiness. Healthiness is happiness.
