it is for medical purposes?
The main reason is to put stress on your heart in order to use an ECG to detect areas of low blood flow to your heart muscles that may get adequate oxygen during non-exercise times. It is also use to ´encourage´ abnormal heartbeats that only occur during exercise. It is sometimes used to check that your medications are working correctly to prevent angina.

Could also measure your VO2max, which is how much oxygen you can use while exercising.0
