Looking for advice on new exercises

Since I've started working out, my exercise has come strictly from running. I just joined the Y because it's getting too cold to run outside. I'd like to add some different workouts to my regimen and was wondering if anyone could give some advice on what machines I might want to work on. I'm basically working out to lose weight. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

I run, too, and love being outside. That said, I know that I need to work my muscles, especially my upper body. Does the Y have any group classes? I take a RIP class, which uses weights for all major body parts, and kickboxing, which is an amazing class for toning. There's also a warrior fit camp that I've started going to that mixes up weights and cardio. The teacher puts us through a different routine each week. If I can make it to those three classes each week, I know that I've gotten a good muscle workout and have burned quite a few calories at the same time.

Weight training is the best with cardio. Barbell squats will make legs and butt look amazing. Use machines as secondary to isolate individual muscles. Upper body pullups, barbell reverse grip rows, incline dumbbell presses, dumbbell rows, cable side raises, dumbbell curls, reverse grip push downs one arm, deadlifts, hyper extensions and so on. I could go on but basically you need weight training to get best results.

Does the Y design a programme on induction for you to follow? If not there are plenty of gym routines available on the internet that you can try out...
  • I would recommend choosing the outdoors, over the gym. Being comfortable in the weather is really about having the right gear. With today's wondrous array of technical fabrics and applying a layered system, one can do most things that were available to them in the summer well into and through the winter months. Another thing to consider is choosing a winter sport that compliments your running, such as mountaineering and cross-country skiing.
