Are all standard calculators lousy for tall people?

I decided a couple months ago I needed to back get back in good shape. Scale said 270 lbs, but I'm 6'5", means bmi of 32. Went and found all the calculators and according those I was around 31% body fat. Now I was overweight no question, but to look at me I don't think it was obese. Either way, I got busy working at it and now down to 235 and feeling better. Still according to the online tools with my measurements I'm just out of the obese range and still 27% body fat.
So today I went and had body fat tested via hydrostatic weighing. Was a pleasant surprise, as my measured body fat was 17.7%. That was great for me, but got me wondering how often people, especially taller persons, are getting really bad information when using the standard fitness calculators?
Would love to hear other experiences or where to get better info?
