What are the best exercises to start with besides walking?

I am just starting over again and I was wondering which exercises are the best to ease into besides walking. I've made time for walking in the mornings before work and I was looking for other exercises to do on my lunch break (since I work from home) that would be most beneficial until I build up to something more fast pace?

Whatever appeals to you, honestly. Do things that you enjoy and find fun.

Zumba, weight lifting, wii sports, dance lessons, riding a bike, etc. Whatever gets you moving and will keep you motivated to stay active.

Ride a bicycle. It's great to explore around your neighborhood. Maybe there's a place you can have some lunch; if you ride there you can afford the calories to actually eat a full lunch.

    I really love this idea!

If your knees can handle it, walking up flights of stairs can be beneficial and easy to arrange, no special equipment needed. Unless you live in a one-level place, then it's not that easy. B)

Find something that you love to do. Then exercising will be something that you look forward to doing.

I use resistance and strength training exercises

I suggest you invest in some bands and dumbbells ranging in weight from 10-35lb

Bands are easy to use at work and the dumbbells are great at home.

There are many youtube videos that show you how to use the items effectively.

    Good Luck!

I advise trying different things until you discover what you like. There are tons of different kinds of exercise out there. Get on YouTube and try some of the videos. Get on Craigslist and find some videos for cheap. If you have a gym membership, try some of the classes, or strength training (ie weight lifting).

I am reading a book by Deepra Chopra and he says that exercise for anyone beginning or who are fuller figured should not be strenuous. Actually you should only exercise a little each day. He says that by doing a little each day, you build up your momentum but you also are less likely to get disappointed in what your doing.
I found that besides walking, whenever I can get to they gym or can borrow one - I bike, swimming is wonderful, using the elliptical is great also yoga is great for mind, body and spirit. If you love to dance, take zumba or belly dancing - the key is just staying active. Have fun, don't over do - don't focus on how many calories and if the scale is moving - between eating right and some exercise all will be in balance.

Thanks everyone! These are some really great ideas. I do have a Wii Fit and I ordered a couple of exercisey games. I love the bike riding idea so I need to invest in one soon. That would definitely not be boring.

^This! This is pretty much why I brought it up. Sure I want to lose a ton of weight, but I don't want to do it the wrong way or over work myself to the point where I'm hurting too badly to keep it up and get discouraged.

    This^

You local library will have videos too. Netflix (by mail) is another route. Some cable providers have fitness channels.

Keep trying new things until you find what you like. This will make you more consistent.

If you are not sure of a fitness DVDs level....look them up on a site that sells that genre exclusively (tons of info) ...www. totalfitnessdvds.com or www.collagevideo.com

    Swimming.

    Burns calories like crazy.

Works all the muscles. Swimmers are toned!

    Easy on joints.

    No hot/sweaty feeling.

Being fat doesn't hold you back in the pool.

    Clears your mind.

IMO, there isn't anything better than swimming. :)
  • I absolutely love zumba. I just stream youtube to my tv and dance to the zumba videos on there. :) Good luck. :)

I thought it was easiest to keep on my TV schedule initially and just put a recumbant bike where my couch was. Eventually I was getting quite a bit of exercise and I stopped watching so much TV.
