resisted for so long

I resisted for a long time thinking that concentrating on weight loss was for me. I had for a long time been someone who didn't pay attention to what I weighed, hey I knew I wasn't tiny skinny but who was, anyway? I knew that I could lose weight when I focused on not eating junk and actually showed up at the gym, but decided I didn't care! I liked eating what I liked when I liked in amounts I liked (even if I felt uncomfortably full) and didn't really like the gym, and who was anyone else to say otherwise?
Well, after a crazy year of grad school when I put my gym membership on suspend, and a cruise (to celebrate the end of grad school), I stepped on the scale and confirmed that nope, it wasn't just my imagination, it wasn't a conspiracy amongst retailers to make all the sizes feel wrong, I'd gained 20lb in a year.
Even given that, I signed up for MFP thinking "this isn't going to work." Like I was SURE that counting calories and making a concentrated effort (with a goal!) of gym-going wasn't going to do anything - I'm very familiar with a lot of health-at-every-size stuff and I was sure there wasn't going to be any correlation between what I ate and what the scale was going to say.
Well, about a month later, I've lost 8lb. Largely because of becoming familiar with what a serving size should be and actually feeling accountable through the logging, now I feel like I'm eating reasonable portions and making some foods (like soda) treats instead of every day staples. Also un-suspending the gym membership and going to aerobics classes has been great, but I'd say mostly, it has been the food. I still eat whatever I want, but in smaller portions, while sticking to a calorie goal. Much as I resisted, it has been working.
