Standing Time

Hello,
I have just watched a BBC programme about health and well being "Trust Me I'm a Doctor" and they did this experiment with a standing office; workers had their normal sitting workstations changed into standing ones. The stats that came back at the end were very interesting, it was something like standing for an extra three to four hours a day each day can burn an extra 25,000 to 30,000 calories a year - the same as running ten marathons a year!
I have just swapped my work area to a standing one to give it a go and will try standing more often generally. I was just wondering if anyone else was working from a standing office.

Too much of anything is not good for you, I'm sure. Are you standing to try to burn more calories? Are you standing all day now?0

That's 105-125 calories a day extra burned - I can see how that would happen. (calculated at 5 days a week for 48 weeks a year). But when you break it down to a daily amount, it doesn't seem as wildly impressive.
We have the option of standing desks at work. No one uses them, but mostly, I think, because they're poorly set up (you're standing in a walkway etc)0 -

Yeah, it was the adding up to year that I noted most. 125 a day isn't a much, but multiplied into a year is fairly interesting. Anyway, I am having a little try, it certainly won't hurt, and if it does, I will sit down.

I recently switched to a stand up workstation for postural reasons however, I will take the added calorie burn (40 additional calories versus sitting) per hour. If you stand for 7 hours that is 280 calories and I am increasing circulation and bettering my posture too!0

There was something about reduced glucose levels also which was seen as positive results but I don't understand glucose levels.0
