Exhaustion level?

Recently I've been experimenting with how I feel after different levels of workouts. After my 20 minute easier workouts, I feel worked out yet not totally wiped out. After 30 minutes of intense stepping (non-stop high impact cardio) I feel extremely winded and my face will stay hot for up to 2 hours afterwards. It seems that when I do the especially exhausting ones I have less weight loss. I just have trouble getting my head around it since we read over and over how easy cardio will get you nowhere, yet I always have the best results with it. How do you all measure what has given you the best workout for weight loss?

At low intensities your body will turn to fat for energy.
At higher intensities your body will prefer to use your glycogen stores.
At the end of the day it is still about overall caloric burn though. So that said, if you can maintain and easy cardio rate for longer and in turn burn more calories than a high intensity shorter workout than easy cardio for the win.0
