I binged on bread and Nutella with crunchy peanut butter last night.. for no particular reason too..

Today I felt like "punishing myself" and eating only 800 calories, but MFP would not let me submit my entry.. saying something like "women need at least 1000-1200 calories daily" blah blah.. Point is, I know eating 800 calories today will not make up for the yesterday. I just want to make sure it doesn't happen again. Anyone have any tips? I love eating late, as in after 9PM, but usually this ends up in overeating. Anyone have good healthy late night snack ideas?

I think is still submits the entry, it just warns you that eating that way every day could be dangerous. Unless they have also changed that.

That's one of my favorite treats too, but I definitely have to plan for it. Prelogging could help you determine what days that would fit into your calorie goal and not feel like you should give it up altogether, which could lead to more binging.

Peanut butter and celery with raisins, or apples, or a banana, chocolate covered pomegranite or acai berries, lite laughing cow cheese with turkey pepperoni and green olives or banana peppers, grapes with lite cream cheese, skinny cow ice cream sandwiches, turkey, avocado, and Swiss cheese in a lettuce wrap, etc...

I also like to snack ;)

If you feel the need to punish yourself by restricting food you may want to find a professional to speak with out your relationship with food.
  • If you don't do this often, I don't think you "need professional help". I buy pre portioned sizes of things I can easily over eat. That helps me. Pre log it, pre portion it and put the rest away.

Maybe you need to go speak to someone?

    +1

The fact that you specifically labeled it as "punishing" yourself is something to think about. Good luck!

I think "punish" was a strong word.. I have restricted 200 calories or so the next day if I messed up big the day before.

I love eating!!! Especially at night, so to satisfy my brain and kind of my tummy, I use my air popper and pop some plain popcorn seeds to avoid salt and fat. once in a while I sprinkle on some sea salt or a tsp parm. chz but this way I can snack while I watch a movie and I don't feel guilty. 4 cups of air popped corn is low in cals and lower in carbs than you would think!

I've done it before too... I doubled my deficit yesterday to make up for a very bad Monday, for example. I don't see the problem with it... it all balances out. The only issue for me when I do that is that I'm typically starving the next day... so in the end it's a vicious cycle.

If you love snacking at night, save the calories to do so. If you have problems with portion control, set yourself up for success by buying individual servings. If you can't find them, then break your big packages (like chips or nuts or whatever) into individual servings when they're first opened. Put them in little baggies or bowls.

For things like nutella, that can be difficult, so make your snack in advance. Make a nice peanut butter and nutella sandwich early in the day, put it in a baggie, weigh and log it all as usual, make room for it, and when it comes snack time, eat and enjoy. Taking out the big jars and loaf of bread opens the door for eating it all..taking out one baggie with a delicious snack can be much more satisfying without the temptation.

Trying to "make up" for a binge or over eating is one of the worst things you can do. It only sets you up for another binge, and then more restriction, and then another binge. It is a never ending cycle. There is nothing wrong with cutting the next day by 100 calories or so, but not cutting out 1/2 your day, or over exercising.

At night I usually have something with milk...I think the milk helps me sleep somehow. Like cereal & milk or a smoothie made with 1/2 frozen banana, 3 frozen strawberries, 1/2 c. milk & 1 packet of stevia. Or oatmeal with skim milk and 1/2 banana. All these are filling and satisfying for me. And I have major food cravings in the evenings. LOL

Don't punish yourself! That's not fair. You can't be perfect all the time, and that's abusive toward your body. Think of it this way: Would you do that to a child if they did something wrong? Perhaps some people would, but they'd also get CPS called on them. Sometimes (or at least I do) you have to parent yourself, and you should try to be a good parent.

    1. Like others have said, portioning out food beforehand really helps keep you in check. Then you just need a little willpower not to go back for seconds, instead of the more willpower to stop when that jar/box/bag is already in front of you, just begging to be eaten. :wtf:

    2. If there are some foods that are just too tempting (I'd put Nutella in that category), then stop buying it. Don't even have it in the house. I can't have Milano cookies anywhere near me. It's too stressful not to eat the whole box in one sitting...

    3. You might want to consider your timing again. If you are ok with eating late, make sure your meals earlier in the day are smaller and later. Personally, late in the evening snacking is such a temptation to go overboard, that instead I make sure to have filling, healthy, preplanned meals during the day so I don't have strong cravings at night; and the habitual cravings I have without really being hungry: well, I just get over it and do something else. Lots of snacking at night to me is a sign that I didn't eat enough in the day. But do what's right for you!

Good luck, and please take care of yourself even if you make mistakes! <3

Restricting as a punishment is not a healthy relationship to have with food.
You ate too much one day. Log it and move on.

Apple slices with peanut butter or hard boiled eggs/egg whites. Grapes help to give you better sleep too, from what I've heard.
