I have been blessed to have not known anyone personally who has given their life in service to their country but I know many have.

Who are you remembering today?

I haven't anyone in my immediate family who lost their life in combat. However, my husband is a Vietnam combat vet, having served in a recon unit; and during WW2, my Dad served in the Merchant Marines as an officer and ship's medic. Both saw alot of action. My Dad started serving in the Merchant Marines prior to the implementation of the convoy system in the North Atlantic. He also carried troops and supplies to Burma. My husband's recon unit went deep into North Vietnam and engaged in enemy bombardments in addition to "friendly fire."

We were commenting this am that Memorial Day has lost much of its reverence for combatants and support service personnel. I recall as a child attending parades (even for a small New England village) with veterans marching in dress uniform and those that were disabled being helped by other veterans. Nowadays, most people use it as a day to be with families, which is fine; but without any consideration to what the day was originally set aside for.

I have not known anyone either but my brother in law just got shipped to Afghanistan, so I am praying to continue to not know anyone who died in battle. I may not know anyone personally but i still honor those who have lost their lives and those who have served and continue to do so
