....and I'm terrified! I tried to lose weight while not exercising by eating better. Yeah didn't really stick to the whole eating better thing after just a few weeks. Now it's time to actually get off my butt and do this thing right! Hopefully my before and after pictures will eventually stop looking like before and before pictures on my blog at www.myroadtoweightloss.com lol!
What have you found to be successful routines and workout programs? I want to lose fat and bulk up on muscle. I'm about 5'10" and 285 lbs right now. I've got pretty decent sized muscles somewhere under all this padding and protection lol. I would love to hear what anyone has found successful for them! Thanks in advance!

On the plus side, you can always become an obese power lifter. As far as workout programs go, I find lifting heavy objects several times a week works wonders (well for me it did).0

You need a good mix of cardio and weight lifting. For cardio you can start doing a C25K (couch to 5K) program, if your body is not yet ready for running, you can start with half an hour on the elliptical or the stationary bike three days a week for a month prior.
For weight lifting there's a lot of good programs out there. Personally I'm beginning to read The New Rules of Lifting Supercharged.
Oh, a poster on the wall of my gym says 80% of weight loss is good diet. I believe it. If you can't be disciplined enough to follow a good diet, your exercise would be naught. Just an illustration: a combo of McDonald's cheeseburger, medium fries, and medium coke is worth 880 calories, that's an hour and a half of 5 mph jogging. You can see that bad choice of food can easily eclipse all but the most strenuous regiment of exercise.0 -
I started going to the gym back in January. It's really hard sometimes I have to admit. I'm not really going at the eating healthy thing either, I just had 2 pieces of pizza and a half dozen wings but I am still under for my calorie goal today.
I downloaded an app for my phone called Gym Pact. It really works for me. If you don't go to the gym you have to pay real money and when you do go you get rewarded with the money the lazy people paid. I have not had to pay once!
But I am sure you can do it! I have been trying to lose weight since November. I've lost 12 pounds and today I did my first 5K. You can do it I believe in you!0 -
Dont be terrified... Make it a habit... Make it your stress relief. Everyone has to get started sometime. Remember, its a balance between exercise, diet, AND REST ( I suck at the rest part.)
Good luck in your journey, dont let anyone discourage you...0 -

I am SO very proud of you!!! :drinker: Check back in and let us know how it went, sometimes it take a few days/weeks to get the groove of things but before long you'll be looking forward to it and you'll no longer be nervous about going!:happy:Dont be terrified... I absolutely agree on REST being one of the most important things you can do for yourself... I rank it up at the top...everything seems to fall into place when I get enough rest.:flowerforyou:You're going to drop weight like crazy just by eating a healthy diet. A little strength training will make it go even faster. If I were you, I'd start with a simple beginning weights routine for a few months:

The diet is really the most vital part though. The majority of your progress is going to come from eating healthy foods in reasonable portions.0 -

Try not to be terrified. The people at the gyms I've been to have been nothing but helpful, you have all that equipment and classes to attend, it's hard to get bored at a gym (atleast for me it has been that way) Godd luck I hope you find success!!!!!!!!!0

Don't be afraid! I started going to the gym in February 2012 and I was terrified. I couldn't even look at the other exercisers, because I was convinced everyone there would look like they stepped off a Calvin Klein ad. But they didn't. There were people of all levels of fitness, all ages, all weights. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves and it was a lot less of a big deal then I had built up in my mind beforehand. I'm sure your experience will be the same. Good luck!0
