Shin splints

Hi just looking for some advice!!
Yesterday I took part in a 5k, this is my fifth year doing it! Most years I run then walk a bit then run then walk again. This around the 1 kilometre mark my shins started burning so bad that my ankles went numb to the point I thought I was going to have to stop.
Could this be because this year I am heavier than I have been any other year iv done it? Or is it from not training? I have decent running shoes which i got as a present for deciding to get fit this year so i know it's not a support issue!
On the plus side I did finish it by slowing down! But next year I would like to run it!!
Any advice is welcome! Thanks in advance
